To all our parents and students of Year Five & Six, Melissa and Llew would like to say a big thank you for all that you have done during our last remote learning.

The dedication which was shown towards the continuation of our students' education is admirable and we have noticed that many of our students have grown in confidence and have continued to strengthen their academic knowledge.

Our three school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience have shone through our students and they have drawn on all their strengths and values to continue to work through these tough times.

It has been a positive return to school for all our students, being able to get back into daily routines and complete detailed and in depth class lessons. Well done everyone.

INQUIRY

During Term Four, we have developed a new Inquiry unit focusing on our students' health and wellbeing. The unit is titled: Maintaining a Healthy Mind and Body.

The curriculum focuses on supporting students to make decisions about their own health, safety and wellbeing and on developing the knowledge, understanding and skills to support students to be resilient. It also enables them to access and understand health information and empowers them to make healthy, safe and active choices. In addition, the content explores personal identities and emotions, and the contextual factors that influence students’ health, safety and wellbeing. Students also learn about the behavioural aspects related to regular physical activity and develop the dispositions required to be an active individual.

The key questions that we will be focusing on through the delivery of this unit are:

  1. How do people influence their emotions on different behaviours and discuss factors that influence how people interact?
  2. How can we describe our own and others contributions to health, physical activity, safety and wellbeing?
  3. What are the key features of health-related fitness and the significance of physical activity to our health and wellbeing?
  4. How is community wellbeing being supported by celebrating diversity and connecting to the natural and built environments?
  5. Can you explain and apply strategies to enhance their own and others’ health, safety and wellbeing at home, at school and in the community?

So far this term we have covered these topics: Food and Nutrition, Health Benefits of Physical Activity and Mental Health. Following this week we will be focusing on: Safety, Alcohol and other drugs, Hydration and Sexual Education. The sexual education component is being run by the Family Planning Victoria company who has run our sessions at USPS for many years.

During week 3, students completed a range of physical activities and learnt how to take their pulse and record it. Check out our Year Five/Six students completing these tasks outside in our beautiful environment.

Year Five/Six Camp

Our Year Five/Six camp is going ahead to Camp Adekate, Creswick. We will be leaving on Monday 29th November and returning Wednesday 1st December 2021. Students will be travelling to and from the camp via bus, with departure and collection details to be provided during our upcoming Parent/Carer Webex Information Session.

This Information Session will be held on Thursday 18th November, 6.30pm, therefore please add a placeholder to your family calendar. Webex details for this session are attached below: https://eduvic.webex.com/meet/humphries.llewela.j

The purpose of this Information Session is to provide follow-up information from our last parent/carer session held earlier in the year. Some of the content covered may be similar in nature, however we also want to be able to address any questions you may have at this session. Therefore, we request that prior to the session you email any questions/queries to Llewela Humphries Llewela.humphries@education.vic.gov.au

Below are some of the questions which we have been asked to date:

I have paid for camp, yet can’t see the event details in Compass?

A new event is currently being created within the Compass portal. Any monies previously paid to attend camp (which have not been refunded) will be applied as a credit for your child. Additional details will be provided within the new Event Posting.

Are there additional medical/dietary/family details that the school will need to collect beyond those which are already in Compass?

Yes, we will be collecting additional information from families via a Camp Medical/Dietary Form. This will be distributed to families in the coming fortnight.

I’ve lost the details about the camp from the last information session, where can I find these?

During the information session we will be providing families with an updated information pack, such as clothing lists, itinerary, etc.

Will the Parent/Carer Information Session be recorded?

No, we will not be recording the session as we do not wish to capture images of family members. We will however be sharing and distributing all resources, Q &A’s, etc which are referred to during the session.

Will students get a temperature check on the morning of camp?

No, it is not a requirement for students to be temperature checked before a school activity. A thermometer will be taken on camp to use if a student becomes unwell. In the case that a student is exhibiting signs of illness we will contact parents/carers to discuss personalised arrangements.

Do students need to wear masks while on the bus?

Yes, ALL students must wear a mask while on the bus as we are in an enclosed space with limited fresh air ventilation. Once we arrive at Camp Adekate, we will continue to follow the regulations set by the Victorian Government.

What will happen if my child gets COVID19 symptoms while on camp?

Should a child be displaying COVID-19 symptoms, they will be monitored, temperature-checked and isolated in a supervised and safe location within the camp setting. These symptoms will be recorded (date and time). Parents/Carers will be contacted and will be required to collect their child from the campsite.

Will I be able to receive a refund if I need to collect my child?

If you are collecting your child from camp due to COVID-19 symptoms, you will be eligible to apply for a pro-rata refund. This refund is only available linked to COVID-19.
