Student Excellence Program

This term as part of the University High School’s Student Excellence Program selected high ability students from French and German got the opportunity to complete the Goethe (German) or DELF (French) A1 or A2 exams. These exams are internationally recognized qualifications for German and French learners. Students initially applied and were selected based on merit to join the Challenge and Enrichment opportunity where then the LOTE department prepared the students for the exam through speaking, listening and writing practice. These qualifications are a very good measurement of one’s language capabilities and will hopefully encourage the students to continue their journeys in language learning at UHS and beyond. Below are some comments from a few students that participated:

When the Goethe program came out, I immediately registered for it as it provides me an opportunity to evaluate my language skills and advance my knowledge of German language. This examination helps me identify my weaknesses so that I will work harder in them.

If you want to learn a secret language, then German is for you, as 1.6% of the world’s population speaks German! I chose to do the Goethe Exam because I wanted to try something challenging. This program is extremely useful in helping students excel in comprehension and fluency in German.

I sat for the Goethe Institute A1 exam and I attended the exam because it told me where I was up to with my German, what I could improve on and gave me a boost of confidence towards speaking German in front of people. The test will help me because it is almost like a degree and it also made me proud to think that my German was good enough to sit for the exam.
