Resource Centre

The Reading Program at Year 7 and Year 8 aims to develop the habit of reading regularly and to improve reading ability.

Students visit the Resource Centre during English one lesson a cycle. In this lesson, students explore various reading strategies, share their reading experiences, make book recommendations and are given the time to read silently. They can access the assistance of the Teacher Librarians to find the right book for them. Students log their books and minutes read and complete activities on the Beanstack program.

Every junior homeroom is taking part in the Marian Homeroom Reading Challenge in which the minutes read are counted up. The homeroom with the most minutes read will win a prize at the end of the year. In every reading lesson, teachers select a student as the Marian Star Reader. The selection could be based on the student’s engagement with reading, their contribution to discussion or the adoption of good reading strategies. Congratulations to the students who have been named Marian Star Readers. The English teachers and the Resource Centre team hope to make reading a pleasurable activity for students so that they develop into lifelong readers.

This term the Resource Centre has given students in Years 9 to 11 the opportunity to apply to be Library Leaders. Many students have been accepted into this program. The students provide valuable assistance to the Resource Centre staff at recess and lunchtimes. Their duties include the returning and lending of books, shelving books and helping students with their enquiries. The Library Leaders will be assisting staff during Book Week which will be celebrated on 22 to 26 August. The Library Leaders’ enthusiasm and diligence has been so appreciated by the Resource Centre staff members.

The Resource Centre, as always, has been a hub of activity. We now eagerly await the celebration of Book Week which begins with a Book Character Parade for Year 7 and Year 8 and continues with guest speakers for Years 7, 9 and 10 and many enjoyable activities and competitions. This year’s theme, “Reading is dreaming with eyes open…” reflects the power of books.

Harry Potter Trivia

Sunday 31 July  was a very special day on the library calendar… It was the birthday of Harry Potter, and as we have a large fan base here in the Marian College Resource Centre, we decided to have a Harry Potter Trivia competition on the following Monday to celebrate.

Our students were eager participants with much fun, laughter and ultimately winners – albeit a tie!!

Congratulations to the winning teams comprising of Leikny, Alba, Maddie, Labeeqa and Nethra.

Hope you all had fun!
