Year 10 Music Excursion

Sounds of the Screen

On Friday 5 August the Year 10 Music Performance class visited The Arts Centre and Hamer Hall as part of our Film Music unit.

We began the day at The Australian Music Vault, which is an immersive exhibition showcasing Australian music, innovative digital experiences and iconic objects from our Australian Performing Arts Collection. The students and I spent quite a bit of time wandering through the exhibits and learning a lot about the music industry in Australia, past and present.

We then got to go to a performance by Orchestra Victoria at Hamer Hall. This was particularly special as none of the students had ever been to Hamer Hall before and none had ever seen a live orchestra performance before either. The performance was entitled 'Sounds of the Screen' and featured pieces from a variety of Victorian and Australian made films. These included; Picnic at Hanging Rock, Mad Max, The Dressmaker, Lion, The Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Gahool and many more.

The most impressive part of the performance was that the conductor talked us through each of the pieces before they were played, he got the different instrumental sections to play snippets for us to listen out for during the performances and gave us some incredible insights into the emotions being conveyed by each piece. This tied in very nicely with our unit as we have been studying the Elements of Music of late and learning how to listen with a critical ear and analyse the music we hear.

Overall it was an incredible day and the experiences we walked away with were very much worth it.
