Year 8 Digital Technology

STRIVE: Last week our Year 8 DigiTech students were provided with the great opportunity to attend Geelong Tech School.

At the Tech School, students are given opportunities to use advanced resources across a range of different programs.  Our Year 8 students took part in a program called “Tinker Time Mini Golf."

Their task was to build a mini golf hole that contained a number of different functions including LED’s, servo motors, motors, motion sensors and more.  As well as building their hole, they were tasked with writing code in order to have the different features of their hole operate.  There were many different types of holes with different themes and some wonderful ideas in all three groups that attended.

Overall the students represented SCSC super well and appeared to have great time on their day out.

Year 9 Shed

FLOURISH:  At the shed, the Year 9 boys have worked to create boomerangs.  This included developing technical and safety skills associated with woodworking. They have also been making a key hook in the shape of a bat to develop their skills with using rotary drill bits.  Each session at the shed, the Year 9 boys engage and converse with the shed volunteers over some Tim Tams and a drink.

STRIVE:  The Year 9 girls have been working on multiple craft projects and improving their skills in baking.  We have been treated to delicious scones, double chocolate brownies, muffins and chocolate chip cookies.  For crafts, students have demonstrated great craftsmanship making metal rings from spoons, planter boxes decorated with ceramic tiles, and reusable shopping bags sewn from t-shirts collected from Op Shops. It is fantastic to see all students participating respectfully with volunteers and working hard on their projects.

Year 10 Outdoor Environmental Studies

STRIVE: Students undertook an indoor rock climbing excursion as part of their studies. Skills in problem solving, persistence and teamwork were developed ready for an outdoor climbing excursion at the You Yangs next week.

Year 11 Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond

RESPECT:  In Year 11 Health and Human Development and VCAL classes, students experienced two sessions of the Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond program. Mel White, our current school health promotion nurse and practicing Midwife delivered sessions that explored foetal development, pregnancy services and healthcare options for families.  The objectives of these classes are to educate the students on supporting pregnant people, whether this be as a friend or partner or as a work colleague or boss in the future, as well as preparing them for the possibility of being parents one day.

VCAL Coffee Van Up and Running!

UNITE: After a few long years we have finally got our VCAL Coffee Van up and running!

A group of VCAL students have been working hard over the past two terms to create and business plan and put into action. There were a number of tasks the students were required to do before we sold our first coffee:

  • All of the students had to get their barista certificates
  • Survey the staff to see what types of coffee’s they would like and how much they would pay for them
  • Create a Google order form for staff to place their orders
  • Develop a loyalty program for our repeat customers
  • Use Google Sheets to create staff invoices to be sent out at the end of the month
  • Meet with Stacey (Business Manager) and Steph (Finance) to create a profit and loss document to keep track of our earning and spending!

All the money made from the Coffee Van will go back into the business to purchase stock and expansion of the services from the Coffee Van (stay tuned for more updates).

Last Friday 12th August was our first day selling coffees and hot chocolates to the staff at SCSC, we ended up with over 40 orders! The morning was a great success and had lot of positive feedback from our customers about the quality of the coffee and the service, as each drink was hand delivered to the classroom! We look forward to running the VCAL Coffee Van every Friday morning for the rest of the year.

By all reports they’re having a great time & looked forward to the family visiting weekend, which took place on the 20th & 21st of August.
