Year 6 Spotlight

Year 6 Spotlight: A Trip to the Zoo!

On Monday 15 August, Year 6 students were lucky enough to attend the Melbourne Zoo as part of their Inquiry studies into Biological Science.

The specific purpose of this excursion was to further enhance their learning and understandings of animal adaptations and how these adaptations help animals survive.

The students participated in an education session, which focused on learning about the various structural elements of specific animals, the purpose of their structural elements and how they connect to their environment/habitat. This was done using a scientific and investigative approach, where students observed and analysed the fossils of various animals. Students asked questions to clarify their understandings and generate new discussion and learning.

Following the education session, students were able to apply their knowledge and explore the zoo grounds in small groups. Each group was given lots of time to visit different enclosures, focusing on the animal’s behaviours and structural features.

The Year 6 students will be applying their new learnt knowledge to complete further projects on animal adaptations for the remainder of the term.
