State finalists: Intermediate girls table tennis

Kristina Dew, Lulu Yao, Angie Nikolova and Xiao Xu recently competed at the SSV State Table Tennis Championships. Schools from all over Victoria travelled to MSAC, Albert Park, to compete. This team formed earlier this year and won Monash Division and then Eastern Metro Region.

Many lunchtimes were spent up in the table tennis area practicing and preparing for the State Championships. Their time spent together has strengthened friendships among the team. They are a very strong team who encouraged and inspired each other throughout the entire journey.

Although the final outcome was not what we had hoped for, we are still extremely proud of your achievements in beating all schools throughout the division, region and state journey. (We defeated Glen Waverley at the EMR final and they were a wild card entry to the State Finals).

Our SSV State Championship results:

Brentwood defeated Marist College Bendigo 6-0

Brentwood defeated Suzanne Cory HS 3-3 (13 games -11 games)

Brentwood defeated Grace College Wodonga 6-0

Cross over SSV State Semifinals:

Brentwood lost to Glen Waverley SC 3-3 (11 games -11 games) (184 points to 196 points)

Congratulations girls on representing Brentwood and displaying amazing sportsmanship, resilience and integrity. Thank you to Mr Clayton who came along and supported our team. Thank you also to our year 12 student coach, Andrew Park, who motivated our team.

I look forward to coaching you again in 2023!

State - Intermediate Boys Table Tennis

On Friday the 25th November the Intermediate Boys Table Tennis team were at school, when no-one else was here again, warming up and preparing for a day of tough competition.  The boys had arranged custom-made table tennis t-shirts and presented one to me in the morning so that we all looked the part, it was very thoughtful of them all.

We had made it into a competition that comprised of the top 8 teams in the state.  The intermediate boys table tennis competition started off with over 400 teams, to be there on the day was an achievement in itself. Our first match was against Marist C Bendigo, and we were able to come away with a win 6 rubbers to 0.  Our second match was against a tougher school, Suzanne Cory HS, they had some very strong players in their team.  We won 1 of our singles matches and lost 3 of our singles matches.

We went into the doubles knowing we had to win both games to get the number one spot in our pool.  However, it was not meant to be, we lost both, losing 5-1 in the end.  Our final game in the pool was against Grace CC Wodonga, we were able to win that match 5 rubbers to 1.  This meant that we had finished 2nd in our pool and that we would have to play the top team in the other pool in the cross-over semi-finals.

In the semi-final we found out we had to play against a very strong Nossal HS team.  The boys were nervous leading into the finals, and unfortunately were not able to beat their very strong 1-4 ranked players in the singles matches, we ended up losing the semi-final 0 – 6 rubbers.

Our Year 12 student coaches, Dustin and Jordan, continued to commit their time to attending training sessions this term even though they had officially finished school and came on the day to continue their coaching duties. Rohan, Max, Alex, Kanta and Eric did an amazing job, I was so very proud of the way they performed on the day. Their ability to play the game is amazing, it was great to see the transfer of skills from other sports coming into play on the day too.

Dustin and Jordan once again, demonstrated amazing leadership on the day, taking on responsibilities over the course of the day and in the weeks leading up to the day with the multiple training sessions as well. Congratulations on coming 3rd boys, I am extremely proud of you all. I wish you all the best with your future endeavours and will be sure to continue to wear my Brentwood table tennis t-shirt with pride!
