YEAR 8 ART & DESIGN
MR JEREMY WOOD - CURRICULUM LEADER ARTS
Students worked through a variety of design problems this term to improve their understanding of visual literacy and expand on their capacity for creative and critical thinking. Each problem spurs the student to think past the initial predictable response of literalism. Our first task was the Sound Problem; students carefully considered the character of sound in terms of its tempo, volume, duration, context, and colour. Our next problem was called 100 Ways; students had to visually interpret 100 ways from a choice of objects. They practiced design principles of cropping, touching, overlapping, composition, texture, and scale. The third task was called the Map Problem; students used the idea of a map as a point of departure and charted their journey from home to school. It was great to see students exploring the sight and sounds they experience on their personal journeys and exploring all the aspects of what a map can represent. All of their work will form part of a 2-Dimensional folio that the student will take home at the end of the term.
