Italian Competition

Italian Week Competition 2022

In Week 4, White Gum Valley PS students celebrated Italian Week with a variety of games, competitions, and other activities to expand their experience of Italian culture and of how Italy has contributed to STEM.

The junior students made model cars and/or paper dolls featuring clothing and textiles through the ages in Italy.

We were very lucky to host Mr Mark Taylor (Jude’s papà) who gave a brilliant illustrated talk late last term about his work in Venice overseeing the construction and fitting out of luxury ocean liners, and pointing out the similarities and differences between transport in Italy and Australia.  The students were absolutely mesmerised by Mark’s presentation and asked many questions which he cheerfully addressed.

The Years 4-6 students looked at innovations by Italians from the 10th Century onwards and were surprised by the impact of those inventions on our society.  Then all classes were set the challenge of working in groups to produce a pop stick ‘painting’, and to construct something out of playing cards.                                              Here are some of their creations:

To conclude this week’s activities, students

enjoyed ‘ordering’ and eating their choice of

one of Italy’s most appreciated products – sorbet.

This year’s school-wide competition also focused on STEM and Italy, with students being invited to spotlight an Italian inventor or invention, improve on an existing invention, or create something new, useful and exciting. The judges will commence their duty today, with the winner(s) being announced during the Week 7 assembly.

Celebration: Last term our students were given the opportunity to take part in the state-wide Italian poster competition organised by the WA Association of Teachers of Italian. Our students submitted 17 out of the almost 200 entries, and Rose in Year 2 was recognised for her excellent entry with a Highly Commended certificate. All participants were presented with their certificate at yesterday’s assembly.

Complimenti! to our contestants and Bravi! - well done to all our students who entered enthusiastically into the spirit of Italian + STEM Week 2022!                                               Signora Hawke

Attendance Matters

Congratulations to Room 14 who won the Week 4 Class attendance competition and Room 8 who won in week 5.

Annabell from Year 5 won the individual attendance competition. Well done on your fabulous attendance.

We thank parents for ensuring their children are at school for 8.50, which is when our school day officially starts. Every minute really does count.

If you are having any issues with punctuality or attendance and wish to talk to your child’s teacher or Mrs Tingle, please feel free to make an appointment.
