Year 5 Term 4

We are looking forward to starting our new Unit of Inquiry - Sharing the Planet.

 

Literacy

Reading

We continue to build on our reading stamina and comprehension skills. We will be focussing on the reading comprehension strategy, cause and effect, using a range of informative texts. 

 

Writing

Students will continue to focus on individual writing goals to enhance and further develop their writing using ‘The Writing Process’. Students will be working towards bringing all of the writing traits together to plan, draft, revise, edit and publish a narrative. Students will also be exploring the structure and features of information reports.

 

Grammar and Spelling

We will continue our spelling program, including Inquiry based words and individual words. We will be revising SMART Spelling Rules to assist students understanding of how words work.

 

Numeracy

During Number and Algebra sessions, students will continue to focus on solving worded problems using the four processes and number facts, and the revision of fractions, decimals and percentages. In Measurement and Geometry, students will experiment and explore 12- and 24- hour and elapsed time.  We will look further into chance experiments during probability lessons, to determine the likelihood of outcomes.

Significant events affect the balance of an ecosystem.

 

Lines of Inquiry:

  • The components of an ecosystem
  • Investigation of living things within an ecosystem and their adaptations
  • Significant environmental events 

Speaking & Listening

Students will be practising their speaking and listening skills when completing an independent project, developing a presentation to share their knowledge with peers and teachers.
