Year 9 News

As the end of year is fast approaching, we have a number of key dates and important events coming up. The Year 9 students are able to access a number of pathways and opportunities in Year 10, to support their learning goals and career ambitions. This includes; the Year 10 Pathways Program and the opportunity to begin their VCE with a Year 11 VCE subject. This is a great chance to start talking at home about what your student wants their future to look like. We understand young people don’t always know what they want in their future careers, but parental involvement in careers conversations is considered one of the most important contributors to motivation, retention, achievement and career outcomes for young people. This isn’t about deciding a future, but exploring together a world of possibilities.

Careers

Continuing from Morrisby testing earlier this year, the year 9 students participated in online interviews in Weeks 6 and Week 10 of Term 3. Those student’s who have missed out will have an opportunity to participate in Week 8 of this term. To support this work, students in year 9 began their Career Action Plans last week to begin developing goals for the upcoming years. The Careers office will be sending out letters to families this week on how you can support your student to create a Unique Student Identifier (USI), if you need any additional support please contact Alan Ferris in the Careers Office.

Camps and Excursions

Year 9 has a couple of upcoming elective subject camps this term. These include “Surf Camp” for those students in Outdoor Education from 9th to 11th November and Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) camp from 17th – 21st November.

We also have the end of year, College Gumbuya World Celebration Day, on Friday December 9th. The permission form for this event is now available on COMPASS and must be completed to participate on the day. There is no cost associated with this event.

If you need any assistance accessing camps or excursion information for any upcoming events, please contact the office.

Year 10 Pathways program

A select number of year 9 students successfully applied for and completed their interviews for an opportunity to participate in the Year 10 Pathways program in 2023. We wish all of these students our best and hope they are successful in their applications. These students should hear the outcome of their application in the coming weeks.

Year 10 VCE subject selection

On Thursday 3rd November, staff from the university campus will be attending the junior campuses to discuss the possibility of students undertaking a VCE subject as part of their year 10 studies.  Students will hear about VCE expectations as well as benefits of undertaking a VCE subject in Year 10.Please see below the advantages for undertaking a VCE subject:

  • Students will be able to experience the senior campus first hand, which will make the transition from Year 10 to Year 11 much easier.
  •  Students will be exposed and prepared for VCE subject requirements the following year.
  • Students will have an opportunity to study a Year 12 subject while in Year 11 which will allow for more flexibility in their final year of schooling.

After the presentation, students will receive an application form with the subjects available to choose from in which they will be asked to put in order of preference. The form will need to be signed off by parents/guardians as well as teacher approval and submitted no later than the 10th of November.  Preference will be given to first applications handed in.

Attendance and Assessments.

This term is going quickly and it doesn’t look like it plans to slow down soon! Common Assessment Tasks (CAT’s) will be conducted between week 6 and week 8 this term to fit in with everything happening on Campus. This means our timeframes for learning tasks and units of work are very short. It is important students attend classes as much as possible in the coming weeks to ensure they are able to access the learning opportunities and develop their skills.
