Attendance Requirements

Senior Pathways Program 2025

Attendance Requirements

All VCE units involve at least 50 hours of scheduled classroom instruction. A student needs to demonstrate sufficient class attendance to fulfil the time and work requirements of the unit. Each provider sets minimum class time and attendance rules. A school policy and set of procedures to cover absence from school-based assessment tasks must be published and made available to staff, students and parent(s) or guardian(s). If a student has completed work but there has been a substantial breach of the provider’s attendance policy, the provider may be unable to authenticate the student’s work completed across the outcome. Where the provider assigns an N result for the unit because the work cannot be authenticated, the provider must assign an N for the outcome or outcomes that cannot be authenticated.

                                                                                             (VCAA Administration Handbook 2025)

To meet the VCAA requirement of 50 hours of classroom instruction, students must attain a 90% attendance record for each unit.

Students must not accrue more than 5 unexplained absences (periods) per subject (unit), per Semester.  A student (and parent / guardian) will be alerted via a letter at 3 unexplained absences as well as at 5 unexplained absences.  At which point, the teacher will communicate home to discuss the reasons for these absences and develop a plan to minimise further disruption to the students' learning.  The Year Level Coordinator will oversee the attendance requirements for the year level and work with students, teachers, and parents to maximise students' attendance.  The Senior School Manager will oversee continued breaches of the attendance policy.  Not meeting the attendance requirements may result in the student failing the Unit (not achieving a 'Satisfactory' result).

Approved Absences

Approved absences will include:

  • Participation in College activities such as Sport, College Productions, Excursions and Student Leadership
  • Absence due to illness with an accompanied medical certificate
  • Absence due to personal circumstances of which is communicated prior to, or on the day of, by a parent or guardian to the Attendance Officer (phone: 9787 6288) these absences will be consideredfor approval by the Senior Sub-School Manager and SPP Assistant Principal.

Students and parents are highly advised not to take personal family holiday time during the school term as this breaches the VCAA attendance policy, placing students at risk of not obtaining a satisfactory result for their respective subjects.

Please note: where a student experiences on-going absence due to serious illness or other adverse personal circumstances, an interview will be conducted with the Year Level Coordinator to consider the best way to assist and support the student.
