YEAR F -2

We can’t believe that it is already Week 8. Time flies by when you are having so much fun learning!

In Foundation, as writers, we are continuing to focus on what good writers do when recording sentences. Good writers have spaces between words, capital letters to begin a sentence and full stops at the end of sentences. Good writers also record dominant sounds in words we do not know how to spell, use the word wall if we want to use our sight words and most importantly use neat handwriting.

Those of us in Year 1/2 have begun exploring the different types of poetry. As writers, we have been listening to stories with rhyming words and having a go at creating our own short pieces. We have really enjoyed creating simile poems where we used our knowledge of descriptive language to compare one thing to another. We have also been learning about shape poems, where we have been finding new descriptive words and writing them in the shape of our chosen animal. We have also engaged in writing catalogue poems, which are poems that describe our feelings and ideas towards a person or event. Check out some of our writing below!

As mathematicians, in Foundation, we were introduced to the concept of Time. We started by using the one-handed clock to identify the time to the hour (o’clock). We made our own clock with the hour and minute hands. We learned how to identify the time on the clock and made o’clock times on the clock with a partner! We had lots of fun.

In Year 1/2, we are enjoying exploring the concept of Chance and Probability. We continued to explore the chance or likelihood of events occurring and placed ourselves on a probability line. As thinkers, we justified why we were placed there and shared our thinking with our peers. We continued to look at different outcomes when engaging in chance games and reasoned our thinking.

On Sunday the 13th of November, we celebrated World Kindness Day. As a celebration and acknowledgement of this, we have been making a conscious effort to be kind and affirming to everyone. Some of us have been performing some random acts of kindness. We realised that it makes us feel good when we make others feel good!

In each of our learning spaces, we made a pledge to be kind to everyone. Some of us engaged in kindness role plays to show what being kind looks like. Some of us gave tokens out to people who were seen performing kind acts and shared different ways we can show kindness to others. Others wrote down kind words about each other and shared what we liked most about our classmates.

Those of us in Foundation viewed a PowerPoint about World Kindness Day. We decided that kindness does not happen only on one day, we should see kindness every day. We identified and recorded ways we could show kindness to each other. Names were chosen out of a container and we wrote to our chosen person about how they show kindness. Special "Caught Being Kind" certificates were created for a friend. During a prayer celebration, we gave a little heart to each other. On the hearts were ways we thought our chosen friend displayed kindness during the week.

Thank you for reading all about our learning!

Wishing you all a wonderful week ahead.

YEAR 3/4

On Monday we celebrated World Kindness Day. We discussed all the ways to show kindness to ourselves, others and the world around us. We recorded 8 ways we can show kindness and displayed our flowers in the learning space as a daily reminder.

As mathematicians, we are learning to represent and model fractions, such as halves, thirds, quarters and fifths. We created area and linear models to show how fractions can be represented in different ways.

We played a game called ‘Race to One Whole’, where students practised their knowledge of counting by fractions and placing fractions on a number line with a partner. The first partner to place counters on one whole was the winner. So much fun playing games and learning at the same time!

Have a great week!

YEAR 5/6

Lots of exciting learning opportunities are happening in Year 5/6.

As mathematicians, our learners have engaged in learning about Chance and Probability. To extend their thinking further, our learners were given the opportunity to create and design a selection of Chance and Probability games.  Over the coming weeks, our learners will share these games with their peers.

Our learners have been busy preparing and engaging in ITime.  During ITime our learners have had the opportunity to research topics of interest while they engage in researching and exploring them further. The following topics are a few that have been researched and explored by our learners, Maraina Trench, Rubics cube, The Bermuda Triangle and Anne Frank. We look forward to finding out and exploring these topics further when our Year 5/6 learners share their ITime with their peers in the coming weeks.

Our learners have been exploring, discussing and learning about the “Dignity of the Human being.” Throughout this learning, they had the opportunity to explore and document wonderings about Human Dignity and to reflect on the importance of dignity in our lives and also how we uphold the rights of others.

As  part of our inquiry “How do we change”, our learners have been looking at “Social and emotional development.” Throughout this learning, we discovered that puberty not only changes your body physically, but it also changes the way you think about things.  Puberty can signal the time when you start to make your own mind up about things, take responsibility for your actions and make more decisions for yourself.

The Year 5/6 students have been busy preparing for our yearly Christmas carols concert.  They have been learning various Christmas songs and dance moves that they will share with their families.

Have a wonderful week
