Vale Rt.Hon. Mr. Bob Hawke

The JMSS community will be saddened by the recent passing of former Prime Minister Bob Hawke, one of Australia’s greatest Prime Ministers and favourite sons. He was one of our great reformers, from the introduction of superannuation and Medicare, and floating of the dollar and deregulation of the banks, to major environmental protection reforms in the Tasmanian wilderness and the Daintree Rainforest among many others.

Many in our community now might not be aware that Mr. Hawke actually visited JMSS and spoke at the 2016 ANZAC Assembly. He inspired all who were present with his call to action to forge a way forward and save the planet from potential catastrophe.

“You are the generation”, he implored’ “who will decide whether this planet thrives, or this planet dies. YOU are the generation called on to make your mark and guarantee the world as we know it survives and continues. Failure is not an option.”

No-one who was lucky enough to be there could fail to be moved or inspired. He was generous with his time, spoke personally to students and staff, and was most grateful for the welcome he received. If we had allowed it, he would have been in countless ‘selfies’ but students were happy just to see him and be a part of a remarkable and unforgettable afternoon. Some of those students have already been in touch this evening with the indelible memories which will last us all a lifetime.

Vale Bob Hawke, we feel so fortunate to have had the honour of his visit to JMSS, a great Australian, and a role model to inspire generations of young Australians for many years to come. Rest In Peace.

Q & A with Bill Shorten

On Monday evening a group of 26 JMSS students had the privilege of attending the live televising of the ABC show ‘Q&A’ at Robert Blackwood Hall where Monash alumni, Bill Shorten, the Leader of the Opposition, faced a barrage of difficult questions on a diverse range of current issues. Climate change, Indigenous rights, health care, franking credits, negative gearing, unemployment and taxation were all under scrutiny. JMSS School Captain, Francine Machin, was chosen to pose her question to Mr Shorten, raising the confronting issue of the suicide epidemic among Indigenous Australian youth in the Kimberley. While most of us still have a few years before we can legally have our say at the polls the opportunity to understand politics a little better and begin to shape our own political views was invaluable.

Plastic Oceans stand at the Science Exhibition Night

The Plastic Oceans Ambassadors are a group of year 11 and 12 students who are passionate about eradicating single-use plastic at JMSS by the year 2020. Our long term goal is to eliminate the use of single-use plastic and to educate the students and teachers at John Monash on simple ways that we can become less reliant on using single-use plastic in our everyday lives. This term, we have been working alongside Plastic Oceans Australasia each week to achieve our long term goal.

Our group will be running a stall at the Science Exhibition Night (Tuesday, May 21)! JMSS Keep Cups will be available for purchase and come with a plastic-free gift. Come along and meet our team and discover what we’ve been working on this term!

Year 11 Biology

The Year 11's having a great day in the labs! Students recently participated in a rat dissection to explore different systems of the body. It was a bit tough and messy to find the kidney, but they found it hiding in the back!

Regional Exchange Students - Term 2

Our regional exchange students have one week left here at JMSS but not before they experience a AFL football match at the MCG tomorrow and a visit to the Melbourne Museum on Sunday. The students are thriving and all are enjoying their time here. Thank you to all JMSS students and teachers for making them so welcome.
