Boyzread is in its third year and is currently recruiting new members.  Brother Garry has recently attended a BOOKCHAT meeting and members shared what they are currently reading.   He has encouraged the students and praised their efforts in inspiring others to read for enjoyment.

This term there are plans to read more, promote great books to read, create a podcast with Year 12 readers, and welcome visitors including a mystery Teacher, and the local public library, Kingston Library service.  If you would like to learn more about Boyzread, contact Sue Ward: sw@stbedes.catholic.edu.au or come along to a meeting any Tuesday lunchtime in the elearning area in the library.

DAV Round 2

SBC debaters contested the second round of DAV on May 3rd, at Brighton Grammar School. The evening resulted in three strong wins, three loses and one forfeit against SBC – setting the scene for some even competition in the next round.

B Grade:

SBC defeated Brighton Grammar School 2 by four points.  An excellent first debate for this team, comprising Dillon Bulman, Jeremy Mann and Edward McGarry.  Congratulations to Dillon for a Best Speaker Award on the night.

D Grade:

SBC 1 – Tom Burn, Jasper Hattam and Damon Kelly won by forfeit from Brighton Grammar School 4.   Although they did not get to officially debate, these three speakers still presented their prepared speeches for adjudication and received most credible feedback and much useful advice in looking ahead Round 3.

SBC 2 – Elijah Barrett, Tom Griffin and Flynn Morley, defeated Star of The Sea 1, by two points.   A pressured preparation for this team, but they proved their capabilities run deep with another polished debate for the season.  Congratulations Elijah Barett, awarded Best Speaker for the second time this season.

SBC 3 – Jack Pooley, William Devlin and Jonathon Cassar defeated by Albert Park College 3, by four points.  This team continues to put in excellent efforts with research and speech writing, but has the goal of improving their collective manner for next round.

SBC 4 – Sam Gough, Ronan Larkin and Conor Mooney, defeated narrowly by St Leonard’s 6; the recipients of an adjudication with clear suggestions for the next round.

SBC 5 – Blake Wilden, Jack Dawson and Sam Mooney, defeated by Albert Park College 2.  This team is the wild card in the squad, sitting at one win and one loss, with good prospects for Round 3.

SBC 6 – Elijah McEvoy, Lachlan Doyle and Ben Martinelli, defeated Wesley College Elsternwick. This powerhouse from Year 8 knows no boundaries ion the quest for victory, and with two from two, they steam into round! Congratulations Elijah McEvoy, awarded Best Speaker of this debate.

Thank you to all staff mentors for Round 2 – Michael Moses, Laura Matthews, Sally Spencer, Br Doug O’Reilly and Carl De Souza.  Round 3 will take place at Brighton Grammar School on Wednesday night, 31 May – all supporters welcome.
