Athletics

The quest for the ultimate prize in ACC athletics – the Old Collegians Shield - continued in 2017 and after our narrow loss the previous year there were high hopes.

We arrived at Lakeside stadium unsure how the day would unfold, and it turned out to be one of the closest athletics carnivals in recent history with only 48 points separating all six Division 1 College’s at the end of the day.  Our athletes performed admirably throughout the day with many stepping up and gaining spots on the podium.  Special mention must go to the following students who won their events. Tom Murphy had the performance of the day breaking the U14 Triple Jump record by 55cm, which is an outstanding effort, the record had stood since 2002.

Jordan Liaskos – U17 100m,               Gerard Kelly – U17 200m ,            Lachie Benton – U14 800m

George Grey – U16 1500m,                Mark Banducci – U13 Discus,      Charlie Yee – U16 High Jump

Mark Banducci – U13 Shot Put,        Sam Smith – U17 Shot Put,            Tom Murphy – U14 Triple Jump

Unfortunately, too many things did not go our way and we finished in third place, which was a great effort from the team, but fell, short of our season’s goal.  The future of athletics at the College is looking very strong and I am looking forward to what looks like a great team in 2018.

ACC Triathalon Team

After our phenomenal success of the previous season, the St Bede’s College Triathlon team approached the new season highly motivated. Training began early in term 3 with students attending cross-country training two mornings per week and countless laps up and down the pool at Mentone Grammar.  This training immediately paid off with many of the students placing in the top ten of their age groups in the first race of the season at Brighton.

This success continued over the coming months with both Austin Lam and Riley Roberts cementing spots in the top 3 of the Victorian Schools series in their respective age-groups.

The final race of the season doubled as the ACC championship giving the students extra motivation to perform well.  All of the hard work over the previous 6 months paid off and St Bede’s College had a resounding win in this competition as well as defending our Victorian Schools title.  Both Riley and Austin continued with their consistent performances placing second in the U16 and U19 age groups respectively across the series.
