The Leader In Me

SARAH CAFFREY

Leadership Facilitator

The start of the year is always an exciting and busy time. I was privileged with inducting all of Oakleigh Grammar’s new staff into The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and I was very grateful to have the support of Miss Ashlee Scott as I took on this new element of my role.

I think sharing knowledge and encouraging learning is such a wonderful process. It was exciting to participate in the buzz of the room as we worked our way through understanding and applying each habit. Such a refreshing way to start the year. I look forward to building on this and revisiting the content with new and current staff across all of Oakleigh Grammar during the year.

High on the Habits

Each of our Junior School classrooms has spent the first few weeks of Term 1 “High on The Habits”.  This is the time of the year where we reconnect with the language associated with the habits and The Leader in Me Programme. Goal setting plays a big part in the beginning year routines, as each student sets themselves a measurable goal that they will work towards and track throughout the Term.

Classroom Mission Statements have begun to fill our corridors. These are established to build a sense of community in each room, and set up an agreement to which students and teachers commit to. Everyone is beginning their day with a warm greeting and a reminder that each day is a fresh start and is open to boundless possibilities. Much excitement has surrounded the induction of our Year 5 Leaders into their roles that they are so proud to fulfill. Within our new Junior School Student Leadership structure, we now have 20 additional leadership positions for the duration of Term 1. These are currently held by students in both Year 4 and 5, as we strive to create opportunities for ongoing development of young leaders.

Please look out for additional information regarding The 7 Habits and The Leader In Me in our termly newsletters. Here you will find ways we encourage students to apply the habits beyond the classroom and bring them into your family life.
