Student Representative Council

NATASHA SPANOS

SRC Coordinator

New student leaders were honoured at a special assembly on Friday the 14th of February. Every year select students from Years 5-12 are elected to be student leaders, whose role it is to preserve the morals and values of our School, and pass them on to their classmates. These leaders also enact student voice and, as such, serve the needs of their classmates by bringing concerns and new ideas to the School Executive.

On Friday the 21st of February, School Captains, Vice Captains, Prefects, Middle School Leaders and SRC members from Year 10 and 11 participated in a workshop. This workshop was designed to give students the opportunity to learn about what type of leaders they will be in 2020.

Students discussed what leadership means, and went through the different skills good leaders need to have. Leadership is the ability to guide, direct and influence people. A good leader can do all this while maintaining the approval of the people that he or she is leading. Good leaders need to be aware of their body language, be good listeners, communicate their opinion and feelings in a way that does not impose on the personal rights of others, brainstorm with others and come up with solutions, and finally, plan in advanced.

In the second part of this workshop students had the opportunity to discuss the characteristics of effective leadership, what they had learnt from previous leaders, and how they can improve to become more proactive leaders. Students finished off the workshop in a very positive way. Being a student leader is not just about wearing a badge.  Oakleigh Grammar student leaders are ready to take action by taking responsibility for spreading knowledge through inspiration, tutoring and campaigning. Best wishes to the 2020 student leaders.

Year 3 Prayers

The Year 3 students started the year by writing a prayer to God. Here are some of their prayers:

Dear Lord,

Please make my father feel better as he has been suffering from pneumonia. I just want to tell you that I love you so much and I will always love you.

Amen (Christina)

Dear God,

Please make my God sister better with her back so we can do the things we used to do… like play soccer, play on the trampoline and watch movies together.

Amen (Pavlos)

Dear God,

Please help the people that have no houses and the people who have no money. Make all the people that are sick well. Help my family and friends. Help all the animals in the zoo.

Amen (Stacey)

Dear God,

Please help all the people that have had their house burnt in the bushfires. Also please extinguish the fires in some way. One other thing, please help everyone who is suffering from the Corona Virus.

Amen (Alexandra)

Dear God,

I want to thank you for giving me and my friends a good life. We are so grateful to have all that we need and want. I am also praying for the people who have the Corona Virus. Please help the people who have been affected by the fires, their houses burning down and losing everything.

Amen (Sophia)

Dear God,

Thank you for looking after my family in the fires, but now it is time to look after all the families that need the help more than me, especially the people who have lost their homes.

Amen (Mia)

Year 1 Flags

The Year 1 students have been learning about the significance of the cross. They found out about the importance of St Constantine and St Helen in the history of our faith and the cross. Children made a flag which says ‘En Touto Nika’ (with this you will win).

Emerging Sciences Victoria (ESV) Program

As a new initiative in the Science faculty, selected Year 9 & 10 students were given the opportunity to take part in the Emerging Sciences Victoria (ESV) program. Students will have access to a range of subjects developed in collaboration with Monash University, and can study as individuals, in groups, or as full classes. They will receive a mid-way progress report, full report and certificate upon successful completion.

This is a great initiative that gives our students a chance to engage in specialised STEM based studies and careers via a virtual classroom. The following students will be completing the ESV course:

Enrichment Maths Programs

Selected Middle School students are given the opportunity to participate in the Mathematics Enrichment Program, to further develop their problem solving techniques and analytical thinking skills. This program targets high achieving students in mathematics, and is designed to extend the classroom mathematics program. Lead by Mrs. Varsos the class meets once a fortnight to further examine mathematical concepts in greater depth and breadth, and learn different and more efficient problem-solving strategies.

The students also train and participate in various maths competitions including: the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS), Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiads (APSMO) and Mathematical Association of Victoria (MAV) Maths Games Days.
