Music Program – Junior School

At Oakleigh Grammar we will be doing lots of exciting things in Music this year, and I wanted to share the following information about our program. In our Early Learning Centre, our three and four year old students will be encouraged to develop their singing voices through a range of singing activities including: a repertoire of rhymes, action-based songs, musical games and movement activities.

Our Preps and Year 1 students will be working on music exploration, singing and instrumental performance. They will learn about the musical elements including beat, rhythm, pitch, tempo and dynamics. Our students in Years 2-5 will begin to read music, and work on all of the above skills at a higher level.

In Years 2 and 3, students will learn how to play the recorder, and our Year 4 and 5 students will learn to play the ukulele, individually and in groups. Students in every year level will use various percussion instruments to develop their ensemble skills.

Junior School Choir

Students in Years 3, 4 and 5 who love to sing and perform, and can commit to weekly rehearsals, are welcome to join our Junior School Choir. Choir rehearsals will be held Thursday lunchtimes in the music room from 1:30pm to 1:50pm.

Instrumental Music Program

Oakleigh Grammar outsources instrumental music teachers. This provides students with the opportunity to take part in private or small group lessons on a weekly basis. Our highly experienced instrumental music teachers teach weekly music lessons in rotating lesson slots at the School. The following teachers and instruments are available in 2020:

Drums/Percussion: Scott Barton

Piano/Keyboard: Regina Grace

Acoustic/Electric Guitar, Electric Bass, Ukulele: Daniel Napolitano

Voice: Aurora Darby

ABC Program (Flute, Saxophone, Clarinet, Trumpet, Keyboard/Piano, Acoustic Guitar, Ukulele): Marianne Wright

Rehearsals will be run by instrumental music teachers on the days they teach at Oakleigh Grammar, which students are expected to attend.

I am looking forward to a great year with our students.

Drama & Media Teacher

Year 9 Drama

In Year 9 Drama, students have been thrown into the deep end, learning Physical Theatre, Stage Combat and this year we’ve added in Acrobatics! Really taking on the motto this year, each student has taken turns finding their time to shine, by being risk takers in our, “Communication Through Movement” unit.

 Year 10 Media

The Year 10 Media students have been working extremely hard this term, jumping into their first assessment where they are meticulously creating their very own stop animations. With their unique ideas, creative thinking and use of critical skills, these students have been incredibly inquisitive by experimenting with creative ways to produce their exciting stop animations. These will be premiered later this term on OG TV.
