Principal's News

MARK ROBERTSON

Principal

Dear Oakleigh Grammar families and friends, welcome to the first edition of the Grammar News for 2020. As we reflect on the recent disasters affecting our country, we are reminded of how fortunate we are to have the stability and support of the community around us.  The devastation of the bush fires has challenged many areas of regional Australia, however, it has demonstrated the resilience and spirit of Australians who assist each other in times of great suffering and hardship.

We are also mindful of those who have been affected by the outbreak of the Novel Coronavirus, and the logistics around our International students commencing the school year. The creative and innovative ways in which our teachers have embraced these students through virtual teaching and learning, highlights our commitment to each and every student.

As a consequence of these events, it is comforting for families, students and staff to return to the predictable routine of school which is so important in times of uncertainty. Our school is founded on the notion of community, and to that end we have been blessed with a strong start to the school year.

The focus of our attention and intention is always for the welfare of our students. We do not underestimate the significant influence our teachers have on the intellect, emotion and spiritual development of our students. Our entire staff are committed to developing each student by optimizing their learning in accordance with our Strategic Plan, together with our Vision, Mission and Values Statement.

In response to the recent negative media surrounding St Kevin’s College, I have addressed our students openly. I have encouraged anyone who does not feel safe to report any incident that makes them feel uncomfortable or threatened. At Oakleigh Grammar, we consider ourselves an extension of every family represented at the School. Our responsibility to provide a safe and nurturing environment in which young people can flourish, is at the forefront of our philosophy.

I have been hosting morning teas with small groups of our 2020 Year 12 students. It has provided me with an opportunity to hear of their hopes and ambitions for the future, as they commence their final year at Oakleigh Grammar. I am pleased with their sense of direction as a cohort.

Our School motto of Empowering Young Minds is supported by our Teaching & Learning theme that Every Minute Counts. This, in turn, underpins our 2020 student inspiration theme, ‘Your Time to Shine’.  We want every student and staff member to strive to excel in an important part of their own development this year; whether it be gentle or bright, success is measured by our personal growth. I encourage you all to embrace our inspiration for 2020.
