Year 12 Interviews

Compulsory interviews with all Year 12 students have begun where I discuss their current application to their study and overall wellbeing at school, then future options and pathways are explained and talked about together. Various pamphlets, books and other information may be given to your child for them to do further research or to attend. If a parent wishes to be part of the conversation they are more than welcome and can contact me for this to be organised.

Skills Show Australia 2018

The future of Australia’s trade and skills industry was on show and Mr Dunkley and I travelled to Darling Harbour with over 20 students to see the best of Australia’s talent.

The Skills Show proudly played host to the most prestigious skills and trade competition, the WorldSkills Australia National Championships 2018. Australia’s most skilled young tradespeople competed in live competitions, battling for their place to represent Australia in the 45th WorldSkills Competition in Russia.

The wide variety of career options in the VET sector was on show and thousands of people attended the Skills Show over the three days of competition. This event allowed us to see tradespeople show their different skills under pressure, students could be involved in interactive activities as well as become more aware of the different career options. Overall, this was a fantastic day and to attend with a brilliant group of students was an added bonus to a great day together in Sydney.

Bluescope Industry Visit

A small group of students travelled to Port Kembla to have a tour of Bluescope. Many of the students are from the Metals Engineering course at school and were able to see how tradesmen and engineers use skills to produce different items.

Thank you, Ms Lewis for organising the event to expand the students' knowledge and Mr Cohen for assisting with the group so that we could attend.

E.D.G.E Workshop

E      Education

D      Deportment

G      Grooming

E      Employability

Selected students at LIHS participated in this all day workshop. The hands on activities were presented by a careers presenter, stylist, hairdresser and beautician. The workshop is designed to help them in securing employment by providing accurate and helpful advice on how to act and dress appropriately for interviews and help to eliminate the stress in being prepared to make a great first hand impression for interviews.

The fun, personal and appropriate information allows student to discuss with professionals and gain extra tips on how to be ready for interview. All students enjoyed the day and a few of the boys were brave enough to get a haircut on the day. Thanks to Sharna Dawson the Reignited co-ordinator who organises the program and provides the presenters who enjoy giving up their time to make a difference in young people's lives.

Youth Engagement Strategy at TAFE NSW

Selected students who prefer to discover new options in trades careers rather than being in the classroom participated in the Youth Engagement Strategy program at TAFE NSW. Different skills were on show and experiences from plumbing, carpentry, bricklaying to hospitality have helped students become more aware of options in different careers.

Work Experience

Opportunities to do work experience for students in Year 10 is available for the end of Term 2. The process and different options have been explained in assemblies and during Careers lessons. Any interested students can still see the Careers Adviser to collect the appropriate paperwork.

Work experience for senior students is also available and can be completed during school holidays or when they do not have assessment tasks. Relevant paperwork and information can be gathered at the Careers office.
