Celebrating National Science Week – STEM at Fitzroy Primary School

This week is National Science Week! Enjoy images of our students learning about plant structure and function and plant and animal adaptations the last two weeks as part of our Biological Science unit of learning the last two weeks!  We hope you can explore some of the links we have shared in this week’s newsletter and Compass to celebrate National science week with your children whilst we are in lockdown.

Students in Foundation- Grade 4 have been using digital microscopes to learn about the structure and function on plants with a focus on leaves in Foundation- Grade 2 and flowers in Grade 3/4.

Children in Foundation/1 have been fascinated to identify the veins and stomata and incredible fibrous textures of leaves on high magnification. They have also been comparing and describing leaves through botanical drawing and labelling of leaves.

Year 3/ 4 s were curious to learn of the parts of flowers, their important role in the reproduction of flowers and seeds and observe up close the pollen sacs of bees pollinating in the garden.

Year 5/6s took part in rotational animal adaptation workshops where they replicated adaptations of birds and animals including catching fish, using beaks to pick up food and replicating the benefits of webbed feet in water. Students discussed observed, recorded and compared the advantages of adaptations animals have for survival.
