Round the classes

Reception / Year 1: Mrs Measday

We are very lucky to have Ms Tasker our pre-service teacher with us until the end of the term. Already she has taught us some new circle games which help us be a community of learners.  She has also helped us learn the “ fr” sound and then made frogs with us.

In maths we have been doing lots of counting on and addition, and again Ms Tasker has taught us some new ways of thinking about our number tasks.

Reception / Year 1: Katie

This week we have been very excited getting ready for Book Week! In literacy we have been starting to read the story of Tiddalick and have been learning some new vocabulary words. In maths we have been learning about measuring, we even measured the playground the other day. In Geography we have been learning about maps and how to create our own. We are also extremely excited to be working with the Kindy.

Year 2/3: Stephen

We have wrapped up our learning of the Kaurna people.  We discovered that the landscape before European settlement was different, we learnt about the things Kaurna people ate and we also learnt about their family structure.  Our next learning about Aboriginal culture will focus on some well-known Dreamtime stories. We will also use our new knowledge of the Kaurna people to write information reports.

This fortnight we have been working on our information reports. The students have chosen an animal and they have had to find information about the animal's habitat, life span, characteristics, three interesting facts, the family the animal comes from and the scientific name. They have researched the information and tried to summarise it in their own words. They should all be finished by this Friday.

In Maths we have been focusing on measurement - we have looked at centimetres and millimetres, millilitres and litres, kilograms and grams. It has been wonderful to see how the students have been helping each other to solve the problems.

Year 4/5: Lizzie

This week some of our choir went to the Festival of Music rehearsal at the Entertainment Centre. We practised the songs ready for the performance in two weeks time. Make sure you buy your tickets.

This week is Book Week and we have read some of the Book Week books. We have also created a Book Week activity for the book Busy Beaks. This book was about the various Australian birds.

Senior class: Sallie

We had the most fantastic camp in the Flinders Ranges. The weather was perfect and the parent help was  amazing (thank you Simon Vince, Daniel Hampton, and Simon Sheldrick). We will be doing a write up on our adventures (complete with photos) in the next few weeks.  This week we have been finishing our work on angles, quadrilaterals and triangles with Romlea and building on our persuasive writing knowledge.

Next week will be Romlea's last week so we would like to thank her for the time and effort she put into camp (leaving her young family at home) and providing us with thoughtful and interesting lessons while on placement in our class.

Boys' Knockout Basketball

On Monday 23 August the year 6/7 boys went to St Francis De Sales College in Mt Barker to compete in the basketball competition.

We won 2, lost 2 and drew 1 game. The boys who played were William, James, Lachlan, Tristan, Charlie, Marley, Henry, Sebastian, Corey and Jackson. Zac Richards was our coach. The score against Oakbank, our first win, was Oakbank 10 to Uraidla 23, then we had a 2 game break and played Unity. That was our first loss with Uraidla 18 to Unity 24. We then had a one game break then played Cornerstone where we lost again. Scores were Uraidla 21 to Cornerstone 31. After the 2 game break we played Littlehampton where we drew 23-23, we were behind by 2 then Lachie took a shot and got it in on the 2 second mark and that drew the game. We then played Eastern Fleurieu and we won, Eastern Fleurieu 18 to Uraidla 26. We would like to thank Sonya Flavel for driving some of our players there and also for team managing. Also, we would like to  thank Zac Richards for giving up some of his teaching time to coach us.

Girls' Netball

On Tuesday 24 August, Uraidla Primary netball team competed in round two of Knockout Netball. There were 9 players in the team, Marcheline, Taylah, Jade, Molly, Miley, Jayda, Sienna, Tegan and Tilly. Our umpire was Shelley Hunter and our coach was Lee Playford. We played at Bridgewater Primary School against two other schools, Bridgewater and Cobdogla. Our first game at 9.30 was against Bridgewater. Both teams played very well and it was a tough competition but in the end we won that game 27-20. Our second game was against Cobdogla, again this was a close game but we won in the end, 27-21.  It was a great outcome and we all had heaps of fun. The other teams were friendly and all teams had a great time. We are looking forward to going into the next round.

Indonesian: Ibu Susan

The older students have been busy demonstrating their understanding of our topic Mau ke mana? Where are you going? They have also started working on a Quiz Quest to discover facts about Indonesia. The younger classes have added more verbs to their story about Budi and have made kangguru yang bisa  lompat-lompat (kangaroos that can hop).

Gardening: Jo

The gardeners from the 2/3 class broke into pairs and brain-stormed all the things they knew about bees and wrote them on a mind map. Then off to the veggie patch to see what there was to harvest and add worm castings to fertilise the potato patch. Taking turns, observations, fine motor skills and collaboration are just a few of the skills we practise in gardening.
