Numeracy at Home

"These two furry friends, Scarlett the Border Collie (black and white dog) and Obi the bit of everything, help get me through the long days of remote teaching. They interrupt my lessons by barking, making weird noises and smells or trying to jump up on my lap. If you have ever done a google meet with me you will have heard them or me yelling at them to be quiet. They have their good moments too, coming and asking for a pat throughout the day and at the end of the day helping me relax with cuddles on the couch. Scarlett and Obi are also making sure that I stay active by asking for two walks a day" - Angela Roberts

During remote learning, staff at TSC are continuing to support students with their numeracy. This support is offered through the Technical Numeracy program and embedded into all subject areas. For those of you who would like to be able to offer further support at home, the Mathematics Association of Victoria has a wonderful resource.

There is information on the numeracy that can be found at home, tips for supporting students and suggestions for VCE revision. You might think your child is too old to be learning numeracy around the home. Just remember, we forget what we don’t practice. Whilst your child might be able to solve algebraic equations you do not understand, they may not be able to tell the time on an analogue clock or now the order of the calendar months.

The focus of some Technical Numeracy classes is learning about time. This includes: using both digital and analogue time, calculating time durations and exploring time zones and timetables.

Try answering this question as a family. Who has the best time based numeracy skills in your house?
