Principal's message

This week it was announced that students would not be returning to school for the remainder of the term and I have no doubt that this was tough news for our school community, as well as other communities across metropolitan Melbourne.

To be honest, this lockdown is affecting us all in ways that we can’t predict, nor would have foreseen weeks ago when life felt like we were back to some kind of normal. Teachers are reporting to me that while they have strong attendance at their whole class and small group Webex sessions, students across the board are feeling flat and are trying their best to work through the challenge of missing school, their friends, routines, and everything else that is great about Fitzroy PS. I assure you that even though we might feel like we’re miles away, we’re still here and in it together. Whilst faces on a screen will never compare to being together in 3D, we can do this, will do this and will recover from this just like we have before.

With school holidays just around the corner, for some families this may offer some respite from remote learning and for other families it may be more challenging to keep our children going for two weeks. I recommend taking the time to connect as a family, to focus on wellbeing and self-care and to play to your strengths as we know that our children demonstrate on a daily basis. The school grounds will be available for your family to visit if that is at all helpful.

As always I acknowledge, appreciate and am so grateful that we have such dedicated and hard working staff who are doing their absolute best. Whether onsite or online, I’m amazed by their creativity and unwavering dedication to your child’s wellbeing and learning. Maintaining connectedness to school during these times is extremely difficult and I thank our staff for rising to the challenge.

If you have any feedback on remote learning, or would like a message sent out to staff, please don’t hesistate to contact the school at Fitzroy.ps@education.vic.gov.au

Thank you to those parents who have already been so supportive and have given great feedback which helps us to evolve and improve as the situation progresses.
