Year 12 VTAC timely applications
A reminder to Year 12 students that with only 2 weeks left of term 3, all students should by now have attended their compulsory VTAC Course Counselling appointment with Ms Seremetis or Mr Weegberg, College Career Practitioners. These interviews have been held online for the majority of term 3. If you have not booked your schedule appointment, or you missed your appointment, please rebook immediately on the VTAC Appointment Google doc located on MAZCOM > Year 12 > VTAC.
Timely VTAC applications close on Thursday 30th September 2021 (during the term holidays). Term 3 concludes on Friday 17th September.
While the majority of Year 12 students have registered on the VTAC website and created a VTAC account, students are reminded of the importance to SUBMIT the VTAC course application early. This will allow for any follow up by Ms Seremetis or Mr Weegberg and any important alerts by VTAC BEFORE 30th September. Special Entry & Access Scheme (SEAS) applications and Scholarship applications close on Friday 8th October. Again, early applications are encouraged and students can also view the SEAS & Scholarships Demo videos (videos 3, 4 & 5) on MAZCOM for assistance.

New Bachelor of Digital Construction Management
Commencing in 2022, Swinburne will be offering the Bachelor of Digital Construction Management. This course will equip students with skills to learn to identify and use various digital technologies and sophisticated techniques including modelling and simulations for a range of construction management aspects such as time, cost, quality, productivity, safety and sustainability. This degree will also include guaranteed real industry experience in the form of placements, internships, or industry-linked projects. Graduates of the course will be able to pursue careers in a range of professional roles such as construction management, measuring and estimating, cost planning and controlling, quantity surveying, building surveying, construction planning, project scheduling, project management, quality and safety management, construction site operations and supervision, procurement and project delivery, contract administration, risk management, building information modelling and application of digital technologies in construction.
The VCE prerequisite: Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English other than EAL or at least 30 in English (EAL). Students who attain an ATAR of 65.00 or higher and complete all the requirements for this course, you will be guaranteed an offer.

- Melbourne Polytechnic has been delivering vocational training since 1912 and today offers a diverse range of innovative, hands-on TAFE (VET) and Higher Education (Degree) programs.
- In October 2014, the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE (NMIT) changed its name to Melbourne Polytechnic.
- There are hundreds of courses to pick and choose from at Melbourne Polytechnic including pre-apprenticeships, apprenticeships and traineeships, and short courses too.

What do Registered Nurses do?
Registered Nurses (RN’s) support doctors and patients by providing high-level care to patients in hospitals, aged care and other facilities, even within the community. If you’re caring, compassionate as well as level-headed and practical, then nursing could be a rewarding career to consider.
About you:
- You’ll need to be patient, empathetic and professional at all times – even under pressure; as well as an excellent team player
- An effective communicator with patients and colleagues, both orally and written
- Attention to detail is essential, as is the ability to prioritise, be a critical thinker, and have the willingness to keep learning
The job:
- Observe and record patients progress, perform diagnostic tests and administer medication
- Reassure and explain to patients and their families the treatments and procedures
- Coordinate activities that could help patients to feel better, working with other health care professionals to achieve the best outcome for individuals
- Prepare patients for further examinations, testing or surgery, assist in operations and post-operative care
- Maintain and update patient and hospital records accurately and promptly
- Help or supervise other nursing staff

Australia wide, with the majority of jobs currently advertised in NSW, VIC and QLD.
As an RN you could probably choose any location in Australia to look for work as they are so in demand, there could also be overseas opportunities. Nurses work in a huge variety of settings, from hospitals (in every department), schools and GP surgeries, to community services, the tourism industry and more.
How to become a Registered Nurse in Australia
You’ll need to obtain a relevant qualification (at least a Bachelor’s Degree) and be registered to practise.
- Step 1 – Successfully complete Year 12 – English and Maths are essential. One of biology, chemistry or physics are often prerequisites for nursing degrees too. Other useful subjects to consider include social studies and psychology.
- Step 2 – Work experience could help to decide if healthcare is the right career for you and look good on your degree applications. You could look for work experience in aged care, pharmacies, GP’s, community health clinics and hospitals in a variety of departments.
- Step 3 – Find and complete a degree that will give you the right qualifications. For example:
Bachelor of Nursing at Australian Catholic University (ACU)
Bachelor of Nursing at Deakin University
Or complete any undergraduate degree then achieve your Master of Nursing (check that your chosen undergraduate degree will meet the entry requirements).
- Step 4 – Apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), for a license to practise as a Registered Nurse.
- Step 5 – Get a few years of experience then move into a more specialised role, transfer into the medical administrative sector, or apply to become a nurse unit manager.
