Year 11

On Tuesday 17 August our Year 11 cohort gathered virtually on Zoom, for an assembly initiating the very exciting 2022 College Leadership process! Despite having plans for holding this assembly in person in our Auditorium, accompanied by some amazing musical performances, we are still very grateful and happy that we were able to have the assembly at all, even if it was online!

The Student Leadership positions for 2022 include College Co-Captains, SRC (Student Representative Council), Community Action, Living Justice, Health and Wellbeing, and Sustainability Leaders. Each individual domain has an important role in bringing together and uniting our College community, as well as representing our College throughout the wider community. As said by Year 11: Level Leader, Ms Dempster, a leader herself, “We are extremely fortunate to have a cohort that has so much potential to make great leaders and every single student in our level would be perfect for these roles in their own unique way”.

We were lucky enough to have our guest speaker Samantha Hargreaves, past pupil and a College Captain in 2015 as well as a current singing teacher here at the College, speak to us about her views and personal experiences in the field of leadership. She was a wonderful presenter and reminded us that we all have the potential to be leaders. She continued to explain that leadership is a rewarding experience that we should all consider partaking in, because you can gain and learn so much from it. Her wonderful presentation and enthusiastic approach were really engaging for both staff and students throughout the assembly!

Assistant Principal: Wellbeing and Engagement, Ms Stephanie Smyth, is a very important part of our College Leadership Team and we were lucky to have her to speak to us about servant leadership and her opinion of what makes a leader. Her insight and commitment to leadership is outstanding and she deserves lots of credit!

Our current 2021 College Co-Captains, Laura Mitchell and Ellie Carter, also presented their experiences and challenges that they have faced as current College Co-Captains. We were very privileged to have Laura and Ellie answer leadership-based questions that some of the Year 11 students had in mind. It was awesome to hear about the fun times and rewarding moments Laura and Ellie have had throughout their time as leaders so far, and to hear about the different bumps in the road that they have faced, and more importantly, how they overcame them. It is safe to say that Laura and Ellie have inspired many of us girls to put ourselves forward and become leaders, too!

We would also like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved, whether it was presenting or just listening in; we know how difficult it can be during these times! A massive thank you to Ms Amanda Flynn and Mr Matt Graham for making sure the assembly ran smoothly and for all their hard work behind the scenes!
