Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)

Once again COVID interrupted our planned incursion day. Our original project involved facilitators visiting Kilbreda to enable the VCAL students to participate in ‘Safe Food Handling’ course. This will provide them with a certificate, further food safety training and skills and accreditation to include in their résumé, for future employment. Being consummate ‘pivoters’ now, we were pleased to offer the course over Zoom. The students covered the content (listed below) and provided photographic evidence of cooking their lunch in an appropriate manner in order to gain their accreditation.

The ‘Safe Food Handling’ course provides students with an introduction to food safety, the legislation, and how to identify, control or eliminate and report food hazards in the workplace.

Our VCAL students are now able to:

  • Explain the importance of food safety,
  • Summarise their responsibilities under the legislation,
  • Identify food hazards that may affect the health and safety of people,
  • Demonstrate how to remove or minimise food hazards in their workplace and
  • Explain the reporting procedure for food hazards in their workplace.

Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical

Currently, we are working conscientiously to design and recreate ‘Miss Honey’s’ garden. This project enables us to meet various work-related skills and numeracy outcomes. We completed some tasks independently; however, when required, we demonstrated impressive teamwork skills.

On several occasions, COVID has interrupted the program. We are learning to be flexible, show initiative and utilise problem solving skills, in order to make progress. We are confident that before long, our garden will bear a resemblance to the one featured in this image.

Year 12 VCAL - Community Partnership

Yet again, the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted considerably, our community partnership with Yarrabah School. Fortunately, on 5 August, we enjoyed a positive and productive session with the Yarrabah students, and we made progress with our art pieces. Whilst we are there, the time passes quickly as everyone is fully engaged in bringing their pieces to life. There is always a calm and cheerful attitude in the room. The conversations are interesting, and the topics covered, many and varied.

As always, we cannot wait for our next Yarrabah experience.
