Boarding

We have rocketed back into routines and the business that is Speirs House over the past few weeks. Much of our focus has been on getting the boys back into their academic, arts and sporting routines as quickly as possible. The result has been an animated, lively house full of spirit and a genuine sense of togetherness. Our Speirs House captain, Jake Andersen, has continued to run meetings and does a sterling job collating feedback from the boys on ways to improve Spiers House life. Our Housemother, Lise Lowe, has maintained her focus on our young boarders, and we have witnessed a growing level of independence throughout. Our MODs continue to support and connect to the boys in myriad ways, particularly taxiing them to various events across Hamilton. The hallway chat, group gathering the ‘super suppers’ contribute to the welcome space we call ‘Speirs’.

Recently I noticed three of our Year 12 group, arm in arm, uncharacteristically relaxing in the junior common room. They were enjoying each other’s company and I detected a note of reflection in their demeanour. I have noted this with the Year 12s in the past; they seem to become nostalgic at specific points. It’s wonderful to witness this in the boys, a pride of place and an emerging understanding of the spaces, people, and communities that support us in our daily lives.
