Premier’s ANZAC Spirit School Prize Winners

Congratulations to two Endeavour students, Gemma Mann (Year 9) and Annabel Arbon (Year 10), who have been announced as awardees in the 2021 Premier’s ANZAC Spirit School Prize competition.

This competition was established in 2007 by the State Government in conjunction with the South Australian branch of the RSL. It aims to encourage young South Australians to recognise, empathise with and maintain the ANZAC Spirit.

The prize is open to all Year 9 and 10 students in South Australia. Those who participate are required to identify, research and write a report about a serviceman or woman on active service from either World War I or II, and to demonstrate how that person embodied the ANZAC spirit. It is an expectation of the competition that participants study a lesser known individual from one of these conflicts, i.e. a person whose experiences have not been a focus of significant publication in the past.

These students wrote about relatives who have served Australia in wartime. Gemma researched the military career of her great-great uncle, Frank Lovell, who joined the 10th Battalion AIF in 1914, serving in Egypt and on the Western Front during WWI. Annabel focused on the story of her great-great uncle, Ed Ebsary, who fought in Syria and in Papua New Guinea in WWII.

Gemma and Annabel submitted their entries in mid-May.

They had spent months researching the lives and military service of their subjects. Once their research was complete, they then had to summarise their findings in a 1500-word essay, showing evidence of engagement with historical sources. In addition, they had to write a 500-word reflection explaining their research process, followed by a 500-word statement about themselves detailing their community involvement and historical interests.

In late June, we received notification that their submissions had been shortlisted for judging. Following interviews with the judging panel on 19 July, both were adjudged as winners in the competition!

For their efforts, Gemma and Annabel will join fifteen other Year 9 and 10 students from around the state on a fully funded 10-day escorted tour of Darwin in April 2022.

The tour will provide the opportunity for the winners to examine and understand the nature of the conflict battles that were fought in the northern part of Australia in WWII, and also the many sacrifices made by Australian defence personnel in the service of our nation.

Once again, the College congratulates Gemma and Annabel on their awards. In coming months we look forward to hearing more about the preparations they will be making prior to undertaking the study tour. Both will be presented with their winners medallions by the Premier and Minister of Education in September.

We have been fortunate to have enjoyed success in this competition in recent years, with  winners in both 2019 and 2020; to have two winners announced from Endeavour in the same year is indeed a great honour. We are proud of both girls and their wondrous achievements.

Reach Science and Mathematics Assessment Award Winners

In Term 2, Middle Years students and a group of Year 10 students participated in the Reach Science Assessment. Students answered a range of multiple choice questions in an online format, testing their ability to apply their scientific knowledge in a range of scenarios. Participants were also tested on skills such as interpreting, measuring, reasoning and problem solving. Commendable students achieved in the top 25% of their year level, while Outstanding students achieved in the top 5%. Year 7 students also participated in the Reach Mathematics Assessment in a similar online format and we congratulate the 16 students who achieved Outstanding and Commendable results in this area.
