Junior School Highlights

Year 7 Highlights

Congratulations to all the Junior School students who competed at Beachside Cross Country. They did the college proud. A special mention to Raphael Nicolas who qualified to go to the

Southern Metro Regional final on Monday 18th June. With football, badminton, soccer and netball teams going out on interschool sports in Week 9, we expect a lot more success to come.

The Big Science Competition tests students' inquiry skills and ability to evaluate data and draw valid conclusions. It helps them understand human endeavour including the development of science knowledge and processes across cultures over time and its practical applications. Well done to the following students who participated in this Science competition:

Year 8 Highlights

In week 5 of this term the Year 8s travelled down to Princetown for a three day camp near the picturesque Great Ocean Road. Some of the highlights included a beach walk, obstacle course and survivor game. Students were pushed out of their comfort zones at times, and responded really well, even in some difficult weather conditions.

Back in the classroom students have been busy taking advantage of a range of learning opportunities. There have been dissections of hearts in Science, and student run AFL and Hockey competitions in PE (as part of the SEPEP unit). A number of the Year 8 classes will be involved in a project based learning trial towards the end of term, that focuses on cross-curricular, student centred learning.

Congratulations to the students who were involved in The Big Science Competition:

Well done to those students for the amount of time and effort you have embedded into your roles so far. The school production will be performed at the college in week 2 of term 3. Tickets will go on sale in the near future.

In week 1 of term 3 there will be a VCE information night for anyone to attend. This is a good opportunity for Year 9 students that are considering completing a Year 11 subject in 2019 and will give the opportunity for them and their parents to ask questions to specific teachers on what those subjects entail.

In week 11 of term 2 the Year 9 students will hear from teachers and students from the Arts/Technology areas on the subjects offered to them in Year 10. It is advised that students ask as many questions as possible to make the right choices for 2019.

From the Junior School Captains

The cast of the 2018 GEC Production is well under way in their rehearsals, and with just weeks left until the performance, we can really see the show coming together. Despite there being many members of the cast and crew who are completely new to performing and participating in shows, it’s clear that everyone is prepared and dedicated to seeing this show through. And, with some of the fabulous choreography put together by the students of GEC, you don’t want to miss this amazing show.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is an internationally accepted award that encourages students from the ages of 14-25 to get involved in the community, develop a new skill, take an adventurous journey and get physically active.  The Year 9s at Glen Eira College have been given the amazing opportunity to participate in the award.  Around 20 Year 9 students have taken up the challenge, this is what some of them have said; “I love being challenged and pushed out of my comfort zone.”

“Being given the opportunity to volunteer in the community has opened my mind to new experiences.”

Some of the skills that our Year 9s have picked are; learning a new instrument, teaching themselves how to cook, learning a new language or sport, just to name a few.  As part of the volunteer section of the award students are taking up shifts at their local opportunity shops, coaching sport teams or even teaching young kids.  For the adventure journey section of the award the school hosts a hike for all of the participants.  During the 5 day hike the Year 9s will need to cook their own food, set up camp and work as a team.  Overall the Duke of Edinburgh Award provides a fantastic opportunity for students to get motivated and achieve things they never thought possible.

This year as part of the Year 9 Program, the Year 9s were tasked to get into groups and raise money for a chosen charity (RSPCA, Sea Shepherd, Prahran Mission, St Vincent De Paul’s, Sacred Heart and the Cathy Freeman Foundation) by organising a market stall. Students sold everything from giant bowling, to milkshakes, crepes, popcorn and even a chocolate fountain. Overall we had a great turnout, raising over $1400. This was a really great experience and I got to work with both people I know and people I don’t as well as getting to interact with the other students of GEC.
