Gifted and Talented Awareness Week

Glen Eira College celebrated Gifted and Talented Awareness Week from the 7th to the 14th May.  GEC is committed to the support, education, and development of gifted and talented students, however all students were encouraged to participate in the celebrations for this special week.

The week began with the SEAL and Language Immersion Information Night.  Future and prospective students and their families were able to meet with our staff and hear from our students. This was followed by the launch of the Junior School Extension Maths Group.  This group, which meets every Wednesday at lunchtime is open to all Year 7 - 9 students who would like to explore some more challenging maths problems.  This initiative was catalysed by some enthusiastic students who now combine their lunch break with learning.

GATAW also featured a Maths Scavenger Hunt around the quadrangle.  Students used their mobile phones to collect QR codes and answer maths problems.

The week ended with the Languages and Science Mashup which allowed all students the opportunity to participate in an immersion experience.  The final activity of Gifted and Talented Awareness Week was a Readers Team Challenge which was held in the library. Teams of students competed against one another for book-knowledge supremacy.  A special thank you to Anaelle Micciche of 7B who created a great quiz.

Absences

Schooling is compulsory for children and young people aged from 6 to 17 years (unless an exemption from attendance or enrolment has been granted).  Daily attendance is important for all children and young people to succeed in education and to ensure they do not fall behind both socially and developmentally.

Parents and carers are required to contact the college on the day of a student absence to notify us of the absence.  As of the end of term 2, all Victorian government schools are required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence.  Our school will also identify individual students whose attendance is below 95% and will work with these students and their parents to improve their attendance.  The college will make contact via email when attendance initially falls below 95% and will then provide additional support if it is required.

VPA

Our students have recently been involved in helping the Victorian Planning Authority (VPA) with the development of a vision for the Caulfield Station Precinct.  This precinct includes Caulfield Racecourse Reserve, Monash University’s Caulfield campus, Glen Eira College, Glen Huntly Park and East Caulfield Recreation Reserve.

You are invited to share your thoughts and ideas about how to best shape the future of this place for the community by attending a Community Visioning Workshop or completing an online survey (click here for the survey).

Assessment and Reporting

On the Xuno Parent  Portal in the final week of term you will find a PDF document of subject assessment task grades under ‘Learning’ – ‘Reports’. The Progress Report 3 for Years 7 - 11 and Progress Report 5 for Year 12, the final progress report for the semester, is found under ‘Learning’ – ‘Progress Report’. These Progress Reports will indicate if your child has satisfactorily completed the semester or not (S or N) for each subject.

You will also be able to access a PDF report on the Victorian Curriculum levels for each subject for students in Years 7 - 10.

Please also note the following:

  • Each progress report result refers to work done in the last 6 weeks.
  • Learning progress / Quality of work refers to the students’ progress in particular assessment tasks and not their Victorian Curriculum levels.  For example, a student achieving ‘High’ Quality of work does not mean that they are working a year ahead.
  • Similarly for Year 12, the Learning Progress may not be indicative of the students final grade from VCAA (due to the exam being the significant component of the final grade)
  • Most assessment tasks will have a rubric (marking criteria).  Parents / carers are encouraged to look at these documents with their child.

Representing GEC after school hours

Our students are wonderful representatives of our school and we are very proud of the way they conduct themselves in the community.  Recently a few members of our wider community have expressed concern about some anti-social behaviour of a small group of Year 7 and 8 students at Booran Rd Reserve after school. We would appreciate it if parents could please reinforce with their children the importance of using appropriate language in public places and being considerate of others in the use of the park. While the students are in school uniform such behaviour reflects poorly on everyone in our school community.

Last Day of Term 2

Friday 29th June is the final day of semester. The day will finish at 2.30pm. Each lesson will be shortened by 8 minutes.

We wish all our families a relaxing winter break and we look forward to seeing your child on Monday 16th July for the beginning of semester 2.
