Wellbeing News

Thank you to Woolworths Glen Huntly for feeding our hungry Year 12s!

The Wellbeing Team have been providing fresh fruit and vegetables to our Year 12 Students twice a week thanks to Woolworths Glen Huntly.

After completing our Year 12 Lifestyle Checks at the beginning of term 1, the Year 12s identified wanting to learn more about nutrition and it’s link to overall health and wellbeing. With the support of Woolworths Glen Huntly, who’ve partnered with Glen Eira College to provide fresh fruit and vegetables for term 2 and term 3, our Year 12s have been munching on healthy snacks rather than their usual cup of noodles!

The Wellbeing Team have reinforced this eating change with Health Eating workshops, delivered by a Dietician and Exercise Physiologist from Caulfield Community Health. The Year 12s now fully understand the link between what we eat and how we feel, in particular how it impacts on focus during their study for SACs and Exams!

Respectful Relationships were a key wellbeing focus this term. During TEAM students and teachers worked through information on respectful relationships including the GEC 5, GEC Rights and Responsibilities and activities for Domestic Violence Awareness month in May.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Respectful Relationships are what each of us should strive for in order to lead happy and healthy lives. At Glen Eira College, we believe it is important to continue to raise awareness about the importance of respectful relationships within the college and the broader community.

This is also a Departmental requirement that Respectful Relationships be included in the curriculum and is a whole school approach.

It is very unfortunate that not everyone is treated with respect and is safe from verbal and physical abuse. People exposed to negative, unhealthy and violent relationships can cause mental and physical health to decline significantly.

At GEC we are committed to supporting our students where they may be experiencing relationships that are not positive and are impacting negatively on their wellbeing.

It is important that we as a cohort support each other to overcome violence and abuse experienced by our family and friends.

If you, or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, call 000 for emergency support. Otherwise, Safe Steps can provide information and resources on 1800 015 188. The Wellbeing Team are available to speak with you if required.

We understand that this is a sensitive topic, so please ensure you speak with someone should this cause discomfort or distress.

The wellbeing@gec.vic.edu.au email can be used to report any concerns students have that may be impacting on their wellbeing or the wellbeing of other members of our school community.  This includes bullying and harassment and any other behaviour that impacts on their wellbeing and their learning.

Students are also encouraged to report their concerns to any of their teachers, Year Level Coordinators, Wellbeing staff – any staff member that they trust and it will be followed up.

During TEAM sessions students were asked to identify the most important rights and responsibilities outlined in the Student Code of Conduct.

The top two rights were:

The right to be secure and to be treated with respect, politeness and understanding.

The right to be treated fairly irrespective of race, gender, beliefs, age, sexuality, health or economic circumstance.

The top two responsibilities were:

The responsibility to treat others with respect, politeness and understanding and to display mutual respect to teachers, staff and community.

The responsibility to treat others fairly and equally irrespective of race, gender, beliefs, age, sexuality, health or economic circumstance.

“We all have a right to be part of a safe and inclusive Glen Eira College community that is free of bullying, discrimination, sexual harassment and vilification.

We all have a responsibility to consistently behave in a way that creates a safe and inclusive community."
