Pastoral Care News

With the new month, comes a new season and I assume I am not the only person who is extremely excited to have started autumn. Whilst we are still experiencing warm days the mornings thankfully have a touch of freshness about them and may require us to start reaching for jumpers and alike. Our clothing pool has a range of good quality school jumpers so please don’t hesitate to contact me if you require assistance for a jumper or any other winter clothing in preparation for next term.I can not stress enough how grateful I am for the generous donations we have, and continue to receive and I can ensure you that the recipients and their families are also very appreciative.

Whilst on the subject of clothing it is probably an ideal time to remind everyone regarding the importance of labelling  jumpers and jackets............sounds fairly logical and we assume that at high school age this has occurred but believe me (and the office staff) this is not the case. It is not unusual to find many garments laying around the school grounds and without a clearly written name it is quite difficult to locate the rightful owner.

The newly appointed C.A.T Leaders have been extremely busy planning activities for the remainder of this term and our major activity for term 2.

Next Tuesday, Shrove Tuesday the students will be hosting a Pancake Day stall at lunchtime with all proceeds going to Project Compassion.

Shrove Tuesday is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday, which we know is the 40 days leading up to Easter. Lent marks the time that Jesus spent fasting in the desert therefore on Shrove Tuesday eggs, butter and stocks of fat would be used. Whilst our recipe may not be traditional the sentiment certainly will be and we look forward to; with a touch of trepidation, the possibility of cooking  pancakes on a BBQ for up to 600 people!!!!!! We have decided to set a realistic limit so it will be a case of first in; first serve and our pancakes will be available with either maple syrup, sugar and lemon or for the serious connoisseur there is the option of chocolate sauce, strawberries and bananas.

We will launch our Project Compassion activity on Ash Wednesday with each homeroom being asked to contribute what they can to support Caritas Australia's annual fundraising and awareness-raising appeal. Such activities bring thousands of Australians together in solidarity with the world's poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity.

It is hoped later in the year the C.A.T will host “A Just Leadership Day” here at MCC. The day would be facilitated by a Justice Educator from Caritas Australia and follow the See, Judge, Act model whereby students look at justice issues on a local and global scale, examine Catholic responses and who just leaders are and then concludes with action planning for their community. These workshops allow students to develop the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to be active global citizens and provide opportunities to put the MCC Vision statement in to practice.

By the end of this term we also have plans to restart our knitting group, host lunch time radio,  fulfil our roster commitment to cook for CAREVAN and host a bake and cake stall, raising funds to purchase bottled water for  a small remote community on the Darling River in far west NSW that has no access to clean water. WOW and this is just the beginning!!!!!!

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend and whatever you choose to do you get to spend some time doing something that brings you joy.

Kindest regards

Sue Hone (Pastoral Care Worker)
