“Strive for growth not perfection”

30 years ago Dr Carol Dweck coined the term ‘Growth Mindset.’ This idea revolved around students approaching their learning with a belief that they can become ‘smarter’ and that effort will make them stronger. At Marian we have adopted this theory in a number of ways, the latest being the launch of MCC Growth Goals. On Wednesday, in our designated Academic Pastoral Care time, all students were guided through the process of creating a Learning and a Well Being goal for the term.

The idea behind this initiative is to give students the tools to identify the gaps in their learning and social skills as well as the guidance to formulate steps to move towards achieving their goals. At the end of each term students will reflect upon the process and how they have improved or changed. This process will be repeated each term, with the hope that students will be become self directed independent learners.

Below is a copy of the proforma that students have completed. Please speak to your child about their goals and give them input on how to work towards their identified area.

Another way that we are guiding our students to grow as independent learners here at MCC, is through the access we are providing to a range of Educational Platforms.

The College has purchased licenses to these platforms to act as supplementary learning tools for students, in addition to the direct and explicit in class instruction. This year we are offering students a different platform for each stage of their progression.

Year 7 and 8 will again have access to Literacy Planet. Students will be set homework activities to complete weekly, which will be monitored through their English classes. Students will also have the opportunity to extend themselves by participating in the many games, challenges and activities provided once the set homework is complete. The activities set for the students have been purposefully targeted to address areas of improvement, and form a vital role in building student application and understanding of a range of language features and comprehension.

Year 9 and 10 will have access to Education Perfect through their English, History, Geography, Science, Mathematics and Italian Classes. This platform offers students the chance to develop key skills through activities that draw directly from the Syllabus. Students can gain instant feedback through their completion of the set activities and can use the platform to identify areas of improvement in their learning. Teachers will be using Education Perfect to complement the learning taking place in the classroom, and will often set students homework to reinforce their knowledge and apply their learning. This platform is a great tool for students to help build additional skills in preparation for NAPLAN (Year 9) and the Minimum Standards (Year 10) Tests.

Please see below NAPLAN online fact sheet for more information.

Finally, students in Year 12 have been given access to Edrolo. This platform assists students in the HSC year, through a range of Tutorial videos and resources aimed at extending their in class learning. Students may use the platform as a revision tool, to help clarify troubling concepts or to further build and understand their study notes. The College has given students access to the full suite of subjects on this platform.

I encourage you to have a conversation with your children as to how they are using these platforms to further build their knowledge, skills and understanding of concepts taught in class.
