Middle School Survival Skills

Throughout this semester students in the Middle School Survival Skills elective have been learning about the ins and outs of surviving in the bush.

This hands-on elective has been very popular with the students, allowing them to experience topics such as fire building and starting techniques, water collection and purification, bush tucker and bush cooking, first aid, shelter building and navigating in the bush.

Students have been amazed by the simplicity of some of the things they have learnt including making their own fire lighters which last around five minutes (using cotton balls and petroleum jelly), telling compass directions without a compass and how easy it can be to hide from predators in the bush.

In Week 1 Term 2, students will be attending ‘Kids Vs Wild’ at Thalgarrah Environmental Education Centre. This will see them utilise their skills in a number of scenarios.
