Magis report
Preliminary fixtures for the WADL Schools’ Debating Season have now arrived, although these are subject to change until mid next week. Teams for Years 10,11 and 12 are finalised, as are many from Years 7 and 8, but final novice teams will be confirmed at a meeting next Tuesday at recess in X10. All debaters must attend. The first round of debating will be on Tuesday 17 March at Christchurch, and a Debating Breakfast will be held on Wednesday 11 March. A flyer will go out in the coming week giving details of this. Debating Coaches and managers for 2020 include Rory Hewson, Charlie Richards, Ms Kirralee Dawson, Mrs Debra Needham, Mrs Mary-Anne Lumley and Jim Miller. Several coaches will be looking after two teams. Teams are invited to visit the WADL website or the Magis Resources folder to see the topics for round one, but please remember that fixtures are very likely to change when WADL sends out their update late this week.
Our team for the Creative Edge Challenge at Curtin University on Saturday 28 March is talking shape and we now have four contestants from Years 10 to 12 but can field a team of up to 7. Teams from Years 7, 8 and 10 are now in place for the Da Vinci Decathlon in April, but Years 9 and 11 teams are not yet complete. Students interested please contact Caitlin Green (Year 11) or Daniel Doran (Year 9) or send an email to Mr Miller. Training will commence next week with the first wave of sessions focusing on Cartography with Ms Morgan Ball, Science with Mr Gerry Cotter, Coding with Mrs Joan Davies and Maths with Ms Joanne McLoughlin. Warmest thanks to these specialist teachers for their valuable assistance. Each team must nominate two or three members to attend each section. Sample challenges, videos and other resources are in the Magis folder.
Finally, I have attached a link showing the results from our first Magis House Championship event, academic spelling, which saw no fewer than 127 participants tackle 30 very difficult words from different learning areas. Special congratulations to Koolyangarra and Loreto Houses on outstanding performances, and warmest thanks to all 127 who took part.
