French exchange students

We are so excited to welcome our French exchange students from our sister school in France, Notre Dame de Sion. Students will be staying with host families from the College and we are so grateful for the opportunity to continue our involvement in this fantastic reciprocal exchange.

Harry Perkins Biodiscovery Centre

On Friday 21 February the Year 12 ATAR Biology class travelled to the Harry Perkins Biodiscovery Centre to look into the biotechnology associated with screening for the Breast Cancer genes. The students participated in a fantastic activity of reconstructing the Polymerase Chain Reaction process. Later in the day the students actually amplified a sample of patient DNA using PCR and ran the results on a Gel Electrophoresis machine. The excursion was very educational and consolidated the students’ learning in this important aspect of the course.

Lent

Lent is a special time of prayer, penance, sacrifice and good works in the preparation of the celebration of Easter.

Shrove Tuesday is the day before the start of Lent and is celebrated by eating pancakes. Our Year 12 Hospitality students made delicious pancakes in order to raise funds for Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion.

Secondary Students and staff participated in an Ash Wednesday liturgy in their Year groups that reminded all about the need to build time into our busy days during Lent to reflect on our relationship with God and others.

James Green and Alice Williams represented the College at the Project Compassion Launch.

Their report is below:

On Tuesday, Alice and I were given the incredible opportunity to attend the Perth Launch for Caritas Project Compassion. It is a six week long program that runs over the Lenten period, when we are all encouraged to take up the call to give to the poor. Almsgiving, one of the three pillars of Lent, is the call to give to those less fortunate and we can do this through Project Compassion. We started the day with a mass, celebrated in the wonderful auditorium of Scared Heart College, along with representatives from 44 other schools, with a focus on how God is calling us to be generous this Lent. After mass we all went out and had time to meet other students from different schools across the Archdiocese and discuss ideas for fundraising initiatives, while enjoying some pancakes for Shrove Tuesday. We were then invited back into the auditorium to listen to some guest speakers. It was there where we learnt about Project Compassion, all the people who make it happen and all those whom we help with our donations. We were blown away with the impact of the generosity of the people here in Perth and were able to see what a massive impact it can have on people’s lives. This program can help support children’s education, put in new infrastructure such as running water into villages and even help by educating adults so they can better their livelihood and that of their families. We believe that this lent, we can all help change people’s lives by giving generously and continuing Christ's mission of reaching out to our brothers and sisters who are in need of our support.
