Year 11 Biology trip to Mundaring

On Friday 20 September, the Year 11 ATAR Biology class travelled to the Department of Parks & Wildlife Discovery Centre at Mundaring. The students learnt about the protection of endemic Western Australian species using Western Shield. The different types of sampling wildlife were discussed, and the students were taught how to set different traps to collect data. Then in the afternoon we were visited by the Wildlife Rescue Foundation and had the pleasure of interacting with some native Australian animals that had been saved, but were unable to be re-released into the wild.

Congratulations to our high achievers in the Western Australian Association of Teachers of Italian (WAATI) Examination

In August this year, approximately 615 students from 21 secondary schools, sat the WAATI (Western Australian Association of Teachers of Italian) examinations from Years 10, 11 & 12. The exams, which are conducted under the auspices of the WA Italian Consulate, give our language students an invaluable opportunity to gain extra practice in sitting an exam in Italian. A panel of experienced ATAR examiners and markers design the papers which are based on ATAR exam format.

Once again, John XXIII students of Italian as a Second Language sat the written paper and based on these results, two very talented students made it to the Top 10 in their respective years. Congratulations to Daniel Corvaia (Year 12) and Alessandra Rizzi (Year 10). These students were formally recognised at the awards presentation evening, held last Thursday 19 September, at Trinity College.

Congratulations to Melanie Gamble (Year 11) on her excellent results.

All students will receive their results and a certificate.

We are very proud of our students’ efforts.

House Netball

After five rounds of matches, the finals for House Netball were completed last week. It was great to see the large number of students participating and excellent House spirit on display. Most games were closely contested, with several results being decided by one or two goals. With two winning teams, St Louis finished in first place and Loreto in second. Well done to all students who represented their Houses and a special congratulation to the St Louis students. Thanks to Sport Captains Jamie and Michael for their efforts in organising the competition.

$20 Boss Challenge

The Year 10 cohort have taken part in the Foundation for Young Australians $20 Boss Challenge this term. Throughout this program students learnt entrepreneurial skills and the importance of research, planning, budgeting, marketing, advertising and many more key business skills.

Each group of Year 10 students set up a ‘Mini Business’ during this term and all money raised goes to charity. This year we had numerous initiatives such as Bees Wax Wraps, Lip Balm, Natural Body Scrubs, Protein Balls, No Waste Brownies and a Car Wash.

Each group did extremely well and is commended for their efforts. I would like to give a special mention to Declan Fyneman, Christo Fuller, Benji Fuller, Tadhg Archer, Dean Classen, Joshua Dowdall and Osmar Contreras Luna who spent several Saturdays washing cars, raising $2000 for charity.

Well done to all students involved and a big thank you to the Year 10 Pathway Planning teachers.

ATAR Year 11 Chemistry

Students in ATAR Year 11 Chemistry learn that understanding chemical structures and processes can help address global challenges such as climate change and security of water, food and energy supplies. There is a pressing need for innovative scientific solutions that design processes, develop management plans and create alternative approaches that maximise the efficient use of Earth’s finite resources.

As part of Unit 2 Science as a Human Endeavour, students look at the supply of potable water, its sources, and how water is made potable. To support this learning, students this week visited the Water Corporation Beenyup Groundwater Treatment Plant. They toured the facility and learnt about the many processes that Water Corporation uses to provide a high standard of water supply. One interesting learning was that, in order to provide Perth with efficient and good quality water, the Water Corporation plans its infrastructure requirements 50 years into the future.

A big thank you to Helen Etty for her help on the day.

Year 12 Trial WACE Examinations

Our Year 12 students are halfway through the completion of their trial WACE examinations. They will complete the remaining examinations in the second week of the school holidays in the TMEC. We wish them luck in their preparation and completion of these assessments. Students completing ATAR courses will return to school on Tuesday 15 October where they will receive valuable feedback on their examinations.

Year 12 practical ATAR examinations

We wish our Year 12 students who have practical ATAR examinations during the school holidays the best of luck. We trust that your hard work and preparation throughout the year will culminate in a successful examination.

If students do encounter any sickness or misadventure that impacts on their ability to complete the practical examination they need to complete a Sickness/Misadventure Application Form available on the SCSA website and submit it to SCSA as soon as possible after the examination. The form can be accessed here: Sickness/Misadventure Form.

Year 11 students

The College encourages all Year 11 students to ensure they effectively use these school holidays to prepare for the remainder of the school year. Year 11 students have four weeks of classes next term before they begin their end of year examinations. This school break is a great opportunity to take time to refresh, to organise their study notes, to plan their study approach for the four weeks of next term and to catch up on any missed work or concepts that require clarification.
