Year 9 LEAP Class for 2020

Last week a group of Year 9 students, who are entering into the Year 10 LEAP class next year, had the opportunity to have an orientation day at Swinburne University, Wantirna Campus. We are lucky enough to have this amazing facility with its trade centre – KIOSK, so close to Nazareth (just down Stud Road near Knox Shopping Centre)

Swinburne have planned a Year 10 program with units from several trades, to be undertaken a term at a time, to give our youngest Applied Learning students a taste of several industries. This will happen every Friday afternoon where they will attend as a group for the duration of the year. They will be looking at Landscaping, Plant Propagation, Electrical and Visual Merchandising, and will be having the opportunity to work with drones, robotics and trade equipment.

Our Taster Day last week was an opportunity to see the facilities, meet some teachers and check out the campus. They had the chance to experience a taste of Engineering, Propagation, Visual Merchandising and laboratory work. They even bought home some plants (some of which were kindly donated to our Horticulture area in the Joseph Centre – sorry Mums !)

This day was shared with other schools in the Mullum Cluster and it was obvious to all that Nazareth kids were a STANDOUT !! They were well mannered, respectful and involved. Our students actually commented on how students from other schools showed a lack of respect for their teachers, Swinburne staff and in the wearing of their uniforms. It is great to see that our students can recognise some of the qualities that make Nazareth such a special school. Well Done Guys !!

Monash Mentoring Program for 2020

Next Thursday, the Year 11 and 10 students will be introduced to the Monash Mentoring program for next year. Our current year 11 Mentees will have the chance to continue with the program should they wish but others are also encouraged to apply. This program sees our students matched with Monash students who have the same career path or share the same subjects. Mentors can help their mentees with a myriad of things such as homework support, time management skills, study skills advice, tutoring and shadowing opportunities. The program is different for everyone as everyone has different needs and personalities. Mentors meet with their Mentees roughly once a fortnight at a mutually convenient time. Students will have a chance next Thursday during period 4 to hear from a guest speaker and have the chance to sign up. This is for Year 11 and 12 students only. All who have been involved in this program agree that it has been a very worthwhile opportunity and some great friendships have been made. It is free and fabulous!
