Learning Assistant Principal's Report

Resource lists for VCE & VCAL 2020 and the Promotions Policy
Instructions for accessing the online Resource lists for 2020 VCE & VCAL students will be distributed to current Year 10 & 11 students on Friday November 1 and are also available on PAM Knowledge Banks. Also on PAM under ‘School links’ is a direct link to the Nazareth College Resource lists on the Campion site. It is important the these are submitted by the 8 November due date, as students will require their resources for FastStart classes (beginning 25 November).
As parents and students will be aware, the College Promotions Policy requires that students entering VCE subjects achieve an average of 60% in the relevant 2019 subject in order to progress. For some students, their final assessments and examinations may determine whether they have met this requirement.
As a College, we recognise that parents of 2020 VCE students will soon be submitting booklists which may then require adjustment due to their child’s final results. In light of this, the College has negotiated with our booksellers, Campion, to cater for late subject changes. Should a VCE student be required to change a subject, parents will be able to exchange newly-purchased textbooks at Campion, provided the books remain in 'as-new' condition; i.e. they may not be written in, covered, or show any signs of wear. A listing of Campion store locations is available on the Campion website

Booklist for 2020 English & Literature texts
In order to enable students to read their English and/or Literature texts over the summer holiday break, an ‘Early English booklist’ is now available to parents via the PAM Knowledge Banks under ‘Learning Handbooks & forms’ > Booklists for 2020. All parents of current Year 7 – 11 students are encouraged to ensure these texts are ordered online at the Campion website by Friday 8 November to guarantee delivery on Thursday 21 November. Please ensure these texts are not re-ordered from the main resource list, which will be available in early November.
Homework linked to positive changes in students’ personality
Recent research indicates that 'students who do more homework than their peers show positive changes in conscientiousness'. While numerous previous studies have already clearly established the positive link between the amount of effort students invest in their homework and the increase in their academic success, this longitudinal study has reinforced the positive impact of homework to show that it increases the personality trait of conscientiousness. The study further shows that while the worldwide educational trend exists of 'a temporary dip in late childhood and early adolescence', consistently doing set homework helps students to maintain their learning progress: 'doing your homework thoroughly and meticulously appeared to counterbalance this dip'.

Year 9 - 11 examinations
As noted in the previous College newsletter, examinations will soon commence for Year 10 – 11 students, with Year 9 examinations to follow in the final week of this term. A letter outlining the expectations and regulations for examinations has been emailed to Year 10 & 11 students and parents and will be emailed to Year 9 families shortly. All parents and guardians are encouraged to read this with their child(ren) to ensure the examination experience is as smooth as possible.
Examinations will take place during the following dates:
- Year 11 examinations Tuesday 12 November – Thursday 21 November
- Year 10 examinations Thursday 14 November – Thursday 21 November
- Year 9 Examinations Monday 2 December – Wednesday 4 December
It is important to note that the examinations are not the conclusion of the school year: as in previous years, Year 10 and 11 students commence their VCE/VCAL studies in the week following the examinations.
As noted in the College calendar available to parents via PAM, the final day of 2019 for all current Year 7 – 11 students is Friday 6 December.
