Cross Country Carnival

Runners clock up 4784.6km!

The cancellation of the annual Interhouse Cross-Country inspired a safe and solo alternative – a virtual long-distance running carnival.

The Health and Physical Education Department ran the inaugural virtual competition in April, set up through the STRAVA application, with students and staff volunteering to participate. Each participant was placed into their respective House to compete against each other by recording their total kilometres by running or walking.

The aim was to provide our community with an opportunity to stay active and provide House spirit, so we continued to engage with the College.

Congratulations to all participants who together completed a total of 1114 runs that virtually covered 4784.6km - or from the College to Brisbane.

For the duration of the Carnival the College completed a weekly participate spin. All students who completed a run/walk for the week were automatically entered into the draw for a $20 iTunes Gift Card.

Congratulations to following students:

Week 1 – Heather Bruyns

Week 2 – Ella Reilly

Week 3 – Jacob Seaman

Week 4 – Emily Bates

Week 5 – Blake Webb

Individual results

The overall leader was Jack Mallabone (476.5km) who had compelling battle with Ethan Powe (474.4) for the top spot, with Jack edging Ethan by 2.1km. The two boys have to be commended on their efforts completing a total of 173 runs between them, outstanding effort.

Jack said: "The cross-country competition that the school established during Covid-19 was a great way for me to maintain my fitness during isolation.

"I set myself a goal to do 8km per day. My Dad and I would run a lap around the Windan and Narrows Bridge, and on other days we would take the dog for long walks to mix things up. "I would also plan a route around my neighbourhood. I was motivated with the support and encouragement from my family. It was rewarding seeing my activity on the Strava app and I was continually challenged by my fellow Xanten team member Ethan Powe who was always on my heels.''

Congratulations to the following staff and students who finished in the Top 10 of the Virtual Cross Country Carnival 2020.

A big thank you from the Health & Physical Education Department to all staff & students for their participation in the SNC Virtual Cross Country. It was great to see so many students staying active during this time.
