Return to the Classroom

It has been heartwarming to see students return to the College and reconnect with their friends, fellow students and College staff. As teachers, we know that our students are at the very center of our teaching vocation and so a school without students doesn’t quite feel right. To see the sights and hear the sounds of the students gradually returning these past weeks has been most rewarding for all of the staff here at the College.

As students return to school, the focus within classrooms very much is on ensuring that student learning progresses as normal. Despite the disruptions caused by COVID-19, teachers are committed to making sure students their students are not disadvantaged by their time spent away from the College. Teachers at the College have demonstrated outstanding flexibility and agility in adjusting their teaching and student engagement to suits the needs of their students learning from home. Teachers are continuing to demonstrate these traits now that students have returned by making sure that all learning activities, teaching programs and assessment requirements have all been adjusted to suit the current needs of our students.

To this end, we have seen a rescheduling of Year 11 and Year 12 Semester One examinations, a cancelling of Year 10 Semester One examinations and a deferral of the Year 12 Externally Set Tasks. Additionally for students across Years 7 – 9, teachers are reviewing their assessment requirements to ensure that we are able to capture what students have learned over the past weeks and to provide useful feedback on their academic development.

Today is the feast day of the patron Saint of Teachers, St John Baptist de la Salle. He once observed that “To be entrusted with the teaching of the young is a great gift and grace of God.” The staff of St Norbert College know the great rewards that come from teaching our students and, like St John Baptist de la Salle, we are committed to ensuring that our students remain at the center of all that we do here at the College.
