World's Greatest Shave

Last Wednesday, several Wee Waa High School staff and students participated in the Leukaemia Foundation’s annual World’s Greatest Shave fundraising initiative.

Careers Adviser and local Big Shave organiser, Ms Blewitt said her fellow teachers; Mr Catt, Mrs Schwager and Mr Legge and Year 11 student, Harry Kinstler were motivated to raise funds so that The Leukaemia Foundation could help more people with blood cancers such as leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders survive and live a better quality of life.

‘So many families have a loved one that has been affected by some type of blood cancer, including mine, so this is something we can do to raise awareness and some money to help out.’

Former student Georgina Johnson was quick to take the opportunity to become involved and offered to shave her head too.  In just a matter of weeks Georgina raised more than $1,000 and joined her former teachers on stage for the big event.

Local hairdresser Cherie Nancarrow and WWHS staff member, Mrs O’Neill, also a former hairdresser, were happy to provide their hairdressing services.

The success of the day was boosted by the efforts of Mrs Mallinson’s Year 11 Retail Services class who hosted a sausage sizzle and cake stall to raise additional funds.

They used the opportunity as a practical learning experience that complemented their curriculum studies. They planned the event in detail including a marketing and communication plan to engage the wider community.

Ms Mallinson said she was delighted to see all of the students and several members of the community get involved and support the school in such an important fundraising event.

In total, $3,011.50 was raised by our team and added to that was the $1,000 raised by Georgina Johnson.

Thank you to everyone who supported us and thank you for supporting the work of The Leukaemia Foundation.
