Principal's Report

It was with great pride that we welcomed home from Sydney late last week our Bush Bots robotics team. After a challenging design and build program, our team once again made it through to the semi-finals for the third year in a row at the FIRST International Robotics competition.  A highly commendable achievement.

Our robotics program is one of the many programs we are proud to offer students at Wee Waa High School.  The team’s achievements are testament that with high quality teachers, like the ones we have at our school, a committed group of parents, a supportive school and motivated students, anything is possible. Thanks must go to teacher - mentors, Mr Steve Druce, Mrs Sharon Grellman, Mr Steve Catt and the team’s parents and partners of staff who are so dedicated to the program.  Thanks also to those people from outside the school who have given their support to the team.

The Cattle Show Team have also been enjoying success as they compete at shows in the district as part of the team’s preparation for the Sydney Royal Easter Show next month.  The Show Team too have faced their challenges, but under the strong guidance of our Agriculture teacher, Mrs Verity Gett, they have demonstrated their resilience and determination to make it to Sydney.

It’s been terrific to see so many of our students and sport teams enjoying success at sports competitions in the district and further afield. From netball to touch football, swimming to cricket our students are demonstrating the dedication and drive to succeed and I acknowledge the hard work of Sports Co-ordinator, Mr Patrick Legge and other coaches.

Year 7 have returned from what would have to be the excursion of a lifetime. The careful and thoughtful planning of Year Advisor, Mr James Vella, with the support of accompanying teachers, ensured the excursion’s mission to build a strong sense of team amongst our new Year 7 cohort, along with developing communication skills and friendship was achieved.

Last week also saw our Careers Advisor, Ms Stephenie Blewitt lead our school’s participation in this year’s World’s Greatest Shave.  Four teachers including Ms Blewitt, and student, Harry Kinstler raised $3,011.50 for The Leukaemia Foundation.  WWHS graduate and friend to many, Georgina Johnson also took up the challenge and joined the team, raising an additional $1,000 on her own.

The community spirit was shared by our Retail Services students and their teacher, Mrs Sarita Mallinson who expanded the initiative into a broader community engagement and fundraising exercise by providing a sausage sizzle and cake stall for the school and community to boost the funds raised.

I am sincerely proud of the effort and endeavour of our staff and students alike. Together they make Wee Waa High School an outstanding place of achievement, diversity of learning and team spirit.

Lastly, I’d like to acknowledge and thank Mrs Alison Downes who at last week’s P&C AGM retired from the role of President.  Leaving a tremendous legacy of her five years in the role, our school has benefited greatly under her leadership and that of her fellow committee members.  A contribution we are most grateful for.  In her place, we welcome Mrs Merrill Johnson as the new P&C President and look forward to working with her and her fellow committee members.
