News from the Science Lab

The Year 5 and 6 classes have been completing their class presentations of their volcano and solar system research and construction from last term. We have many talented scientists in our upper school classes.

Year 6s have now started on chemical science investigations looking at chemical changes and reactions.

Year 5 students have begun investigating the properties of solids, liquids, and gases.

Year 4 have started their chemical science topic by doing some baking. They have been looking for changes of state of matter and chemical reactions during the making of ANZAC cookies.

Their focus now is to design packaging so they can send cookies through the post without damage. They will only use recycled materials and aim to make the package as light as possible.

Year 3 are investigating how heat affects air.

Year 2 students have been observing solids and liquids. They have also done some delicious work to help them understand what dissolve means. I have had many reports that the jelly crystals were extremely well dissolved and the results were a real treat.

Year 1 students have been looking at different materials. They examined the strength of spaghetti a building material. They discovered that shorter pieces of spaghetti were stronger than long pieces and triangles were the strongest shapes to use in a building.

Our Scientists and Mathematicians in Schools partner, Mr Darcy shared with us another one of his mini constructions. He explained the history and physics involved in making a trebuchet work.
