AROUND THE COLLEGE

Victorian Young Leaders to China Update

This week the students flew from Beijing to Nanjing. They were welcomed by the school principal and teachers to Yangzi High School, which is located 45 minutes outside the city central. They are experiencing a similar school day to the local students, with classes beginning at 8am and finishing with private study, concluding at 8pm. During this time the students are engaged in both language development studies and cultural understanding. This week has so far included pottery, calligraphy, bamboo dancing, tea ceremonies and Chinese yo-yo.

As a result of very high scores in their language tests, three students have been moved into the ‘mainstream’ class with the local students. Here, they follow the same schedule and are studying subjects like maths, physics, biology, technology etc. This has really pushed them to listen closely to their teacher, and they are doing well! All students are enjoying their time in China and looking forward to the weeks still to go!

Remembrance Day Service

On Friday the 8th of November, there will be a Remembrance Day Service for year 7-10 students in the A/G block quadrangle, all staff members are also welcome to attend. Classes will arrive in the quadrangle at 10:45 am sharp and sit in their class groups. There will be a one-minute silence at 11 am and the service will conclude at approximately 11:10 am. This being the Centenary of Armistice, it marks a significant time in Australian and New Zealand history, and we kindly ask that all attendees pay their full respects to those who fought for us and gave their lives for our country. We look forward to seeing you there.

Breakfast Club

Every Thursday morning before school, volunteers from the Doncaster Church of Christ and Holy Trinity Anglican Church come to the College to help prepare a free breakfast for any students who wish to attend. On the menu last week was pancakes! It is also an opportunity for students to play games with each other and catch up before the school day starts.
