Year 8 Integrated Project - Lead2Sustain

On Tuesday, 30 October seven Year 8 students from the SEAL class (Kelly N. 8E, Elina J. 8E, Keiana T. 8E, Andrew T. 8E Noah F. 8E, Blake C. 8E, Brian C. 8E) supervised by Mrs Allen, went to Currawong Bush Park and participated in the ‘Lead2Sustain’ program which was hosted by the Manningham Council. The event consisted of a collaboration of many schools from Manningham. Small groups of secondary students from varying schools were selected to present their own 45-minute workshop about sustainability to primary school students ranging from Grades 2-6.

In Term 2, the two teams from DSC were selected by their peers to run these workshops. One team presented their workshop to Grade 2 and 3 students about the importance of recycling. It consisted of various activities and a game to conclude. The other team presented their workshop to Grade 3 and 4 students about waste management. They took the students on an informative bush walk around a section of the park and included various activities to follow.

The students left the college at 8:30 am and travelled to the bush park via bus. When they arrived, they located their workshop areas and began setting up. The students were then given the schedule for the day; four sessions with a recess and lunch break in between. The primary school groups contained no more than 20 students and were a combination of different schools within the event. It was very interesting to see how the different groups of students responded to the activities.

In conclusion, the ‘Lead2Sustain’ program was a very enjoyable experience for all who participated. There were many interesting and useful things shared and learnt throughout. The students would like to thank the Manningham Council for making it possible for schools in the area. Also, a big thanks to Mrs Allen and Ms Chiuchiarelli who helped them organise their workshop the event.

Peer Transition Program

Year 8 students, Jasper, Ella, Natasha, Hayley, Stefan, Jon, Lilly and Xavier, have represented DSC at Andersons Creek PS, Doncaster PS and Doncaster Gardens PS, supporting Grade 6 students to understand what it is like to go to secondary school.

These students supported by Judith and Ash from Gateway LLEN, were trained to run ‘circle time’ in each of the schools. This enabled the grade 6 students to explore topics that they were concerned about in starting their secondary education.

Student reflections:

I enjoyed participating in the Peer Transition Program because it was a great experience where I learnt many values such as leadership skills, public speaking and cooperating with new people. During the program, I enjoyed going to schools and talking about the students' worries in high school knowing I made a difference and seeing everyone smile.

The Peer Support Transition program influenced my choices in many ways and overall it made me a better leader and a more welcoming person towards others. I became more confident in front of primary school children and Gateway LLen improved my responsibility and respect towards teachers and school children. I hope school children feel more confident about attending high school next year. I’m thankful for such a great opportunity and I have gained many skills and values that I will use in my everyday life.

I'd just like to thank you for making myself a better person by selecting me to be able to share my knowledge and experiences of the transition from primary to high school with many Year 6 students from several schools. This amazing experience definitely made me a more confident speaker in front of audiences and helped my deal with kids younger than me better. The whole journey has made me a better leader and has made my schooling experience definitely a better one. Once again, a very big thank you from myself and all of your effort into making all this possible is very much appreciated.

State-wide Science Talent Search

In Semester 1, students from years 7-9 participated in the 2018 Science Talent Search. Some students developed posters or creative writing pieces based on the theme ‘Australian Game Changers or Change Makers’. Others completed experimental research or photographic studies.

Following the assessment, twenty entries were sent for formal judging in the competition. Of these, three students have been awarded bursaries.

I would like to congratulate them on this wonderful achievement and all the hard work and effort they put into their entries.
