International Students

Welcoming our new International Students

On Wednesday, 13 February, it was the first day of the Intensive International Students Homework Club. Judy ZHU, the International Student Captain took great initiative and ran a “Q & A’ session with the students in order to help them to adjust to DSC school life. A variety of questions were asked by students, including questions about, VCE subjects, school uniform, textbooks, using Compass, sending school emails, and clubs and extra-curricular activities at the school. Judy was very patient with her peers and answered all questions in great details. I was very pleased to see that Judy took the initiative to make sure the newly arrived International Students felt welcome and comfortable and their new school.

We had a visit from the School Therapy Dog ‘Ziggy’, who was introduced to all the intensive students. It was quite surprising to them, as they had never seen a dog at their schools back home. With a bit of encouragement, Ziggy performed ‘sit’, ‘shake hands’ and ‘drop’ in the perfect way and showed how disciplined he is with students.  The students were amazed at what Ziggy could do and they were very keen to find out more about him. Well done to all new International Students. We hope you have a fruitful and wonderful year at DSC!

Mentoring International Students in the Debating Club

International student Rebecca ZHAO is new to the school debating club and she is quite nervous about whether she is capable of filling her role in the team. She was fortunate enough to be paired with Mavis FANG, who has been part of the debating club for the last 2 years and has achieved outstanding results in competitions held outside of the school.

Mavis gave her feedback on being a mentor to help improve Rebecca's confidence in debating:

For me, mentoring other people helps me better understand my own experiences, learn from them, and become a more effective leader in life. When Ms Huang told me that Rebecca had chosen to participate in the debating club, she suggested that I give her some advice from my experiences being part of the debating club. I love helping others. It helps to increase my sense of self-fulfilment. I feel like helping others is just part of who I am. When I am sharing my knowledge, I am able to gain an intimate understanding of how the world looks through someone else’s eyes at the same time.
