College Matters

From School Council

Hello everyone, my name is Mia Evans and I am a student member on the School Council. I am new to the council as I was voted on this year, and since I have joined I have gained lots of insight into the school and how it runs, and I hope that I can aid in improving the school.

Our current and future upgrades are enabling better facilities for our students, teachers, and visitors, thus providing a warm and welcoming environment.

Council members had an informative experience in our latest meeting, with a great agenda that  enabled us to understand students and both their educational interests and their school results. Learning about STEAM and how gender influences STEAM selection has helped give insight on how our school can support and encourage our students to choose STEAM-based subjects.

We had a fabulous presentation from Helen Forgasz, Emeritus Professor, Faculty of Education, at Monash University, about STEAM and gender at school. The presentation showed us the different STEAM subjects chosen to study depending on gender, the STEAM subjects students decided to study in co-ed schools compared to single-sex schools, and also how people of different genders from different countries categorise STEAM subjects.

This information allows us to evaluate why these academic choices are being made and how we can encourage students to select a wider variety of STEAM subjects to study. The study also showed the different factors which disable or push girls away from selecting STEAM and how we, as an educational community, can help increase these numbers.

Thank you.

Parent/Teacher/Student interviews

Thank you to all parents and guardians who attended the recent parent/teacher/student interviews to discuss their daughter’s progress.

If you have any concerns about your child’s work habits or assessment tasks, please email the classroom teacher directly through Compass.

Uniform options September & October

Students are able to wear either summer or winter uniform to school during September and October.

Given students can choose to wear either option it is important to note variations (or hybrids) of the uniform are not acceptable. For example the winter scarf cannot be worn with the summer uniform and will be confiscated.

Please choose your uniform option wisely as the temperature will continue to fluctuate during the next few months.

Late arrivals and Level Crossing Removal Project

The Level Crossing Removal Project works at Mentone and Cheltenham stations have the potential to impact all travel to MGSC. Changes to train schedules, roadworks and street closures will cause disruptions that will impact many routes to MGSC while major construction works are underway.

Parents and families are encouraged to keep informed by signing up for updates and to plan travel accordingly.  The MGSC Attendance policy includes a commitment from parents and families to ensure their child/children attend school on time every day. This will be particularly important when exams are underway in term 4 and we suggest effective planning will ensure timely arrival at school.
